General Questions
A wikipage is a page that is editable by more than one people and has a revision system. A revision system allows for subsequent editing to be archived in the 'history' of the page. This in turn allows for comparing what changed between any two versions and allows us to easily revert back to an earlier version of the page. In conclusion, this allows for a number of people to collaboratively edit a document while allowing them to see who edited what and when.
You can use it to write documents like you do in your desktop word processor. You can put text, images, videos and tables in a wikipage. With some creativity, you can use it for multimedia gallery, polling/voting, group brainstorming, blog articles, etc.
Are there examples of wikipages put to good use?

Everything in WiserEarth behaves like a wikipage. Why?
WiserEarth is a community-driven site where content is created and edited by the community. So, almost every page in WiserEarth has a revision system. This will encourage members to be bold in editing content because if things don't work out, they can easily revert back to an earlier version of a page.
Editing Wikipages
You can edit a wikipage by clicking the 'Edit Title' or 'Edit This Page' links on top of the wikipage. Clicking on the 'Edit Title' will also allow you to check an option that says "wide".

Checking that box will widen your wikpage by removing the right hand side, where you would normally see the links like the Actions bar, Contributors to this page and other information.
What is the 'Show History' link for?
This is where the magic of wikipage's revision system works. When you click it, the following section will pop under the link.

Clicking on any revision number,#85 in this example, will display how the wikipage looks like 7 months ago. One can then decide to revert back to that revision by clicking the 'new revision' link.
You can also compare between any two revisions by entering the revision number and clicking the 'Go' button.

In this example, the title of the wikipage was changed from 'Get Involved' to 'What you can do'.
Access privileges are set when you first create a wikipage. The function is to limit viewing and editing by one or certain number of groups only. If your group is public or semi-private however, others can see it but can't edit.
Can I keep a wikipage for private use?
You can use a wikipage for your own purpose, but if you're looking to keep it private, you'd have to first start a private group and create a wikipage with limited private access in that group. If you'd like some help on that, feel free to contact support@wiserearth.org for some help.
Can I import word documents to a wikipage?
Yes you can. First by opening your document in your word processor, copying all the content, and then clicking the
button in the wikipage editor to paste the content. Images however will not be included as you must manually upload each image using the built-in editor.
What do I need to learn to create good-looking wikipages?
WiserEarth wikipages are built using HTML, if you master HTML coding, you can be more creative and flexible in formatting your wikipage. You can also learn to use a desktop HTML editor which is easier to use and usually more powerful than the built-in editor.
You need to contact one of WiserEarth editors or administrators to do that. This is to prevent abuse of the ability to delete content. Please visit the Help Desk to request deletion of your wikipage.
Yes you can. Go to the comment section of a wikipage, write what you think of the wikipage and choose between one to five stars to rate it.
More About Wikipages
What license is used for wikipages in WiserEarth?
Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 License
What WYSIWYG editor is used to edit wikipages?
WiserEarth use the latest version of the opensource TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor. WYSIWYG is an acronym that stands for "What You See Is What You Get", meaning that any edits made in an HTML editor will show up the same when viewed inside a browser.
Is there a limit to the files and photos storage on a wikipage?
You can upload any number of photos up to 5MB each. Only gif, jpg, or png are allowed. If you want to upload bigger images, you can use the file upload section which limits the size to 50MB per file. This can be used to upload documents, videos, podcasts etc.
How can I link a wikipage to other entities (resources, events, etc.)?
You must first go to the Network section of the other page (resource, event, etc.) as wikipages don't have their own Network section. From there you need to click the [Add] link and enter the wikipage title in the search box. Then put a tick mark on the search result and click Finish.
I don't see the "Actions" box, what happened?
This indicates that the wikipage is set to 'wide'. You can click 'Edit Title', unmark the 'wide' checkbox, click Save and then reload the wikipage. When you're done with the Actions box, you can set it to 'wide' again.
Can I export a wikipage to a file?
At the moment, no. We hope to have this feature in the future. In the mean time, you can use your browsers 'Save As' feature. In Opera, you might want to use the 'Save As Web Archive (single file)' to retain the layout as is shown in your browser. In Firefox, you can achieve the same end by installing the UnMHT extension. Alternatively, you might want to install a PDF printer (here's a free one) so you can save a page as PDF.

Perhaps Honore meant pressing Ctrl + F5 (without Shift).

Hi Tom,
Unfortunately not much can be done about this - we'll do whatever we can to try to hunt down a fix, but the sad truth is, Microsoft made a terribly crappy browser with IE6 and IE7 - neither of them comply to web standards. Our editing toolbar is a 3rd party open-source software called "TinyMCE", and they design their editing toolbar based on web standards. When it comes to browsers like IE6 and IE7, they just frankly do not get along very well.
However, there's generally one thing you can try that might remedy this. Press Shift + Ctrl + F5 and that might help.
I'll see if I can find out anymore about this - I hope in the meantime, you can use Firefox for this site!

Hi Tom,
Just finished testing with IE7. Yes indeed, I'm also experiencing the same problem. Can't even post comments.
Will pass this on to our tech team for fixing ASAP. Thanks for reporting Tom. You might want to add this page to your watchlist to see new comments in your inbox.
Thanks, |

Hi Tom,
IE8 is not gold yet (newest version is still RC1, not sure if you're using this one or earlier beta versions). It has issues/errors in handling many popular websites like wikipedia, facebook and microsoft's own live.com (for more, see here). In general, it's better to avoid RCs or betas for your main browser.
IE7 on the other hand (not too unsimilar with IE6) is not a browser that is the most complying to web-standards. That said, web developers everywhere do try (and struggle at times) to make their sites render and function properly on IE6 / IE7. So, this could be a bug on our system. Let me pass this on to our developers.
WiserEarth btw is optimized to work with the newest Firefox, that's why you'll rarely see errors using it.
Bowo, p.s. I'm downloading and installing IE7 on my pc now to check if there's a quick solution to this. Will post back in a few minutes. |

I am having troubles editing wiki using IE v 7 or v8. When I select edit page, instead of seeing the toolbar for WYSIWYG editing, the page shows up in a drop down box. This same roblem has occurred for other group members. I do not have this problem with Firefox. Is there a setting in IE I need to adjust for proper functionality.
