About WiserEarth's Organization Directory

Why create yet another directory?

Unlike other online directories, WiserEarth's directory is non-commercial and free to use where entries are created and edited by people like you. Along with it's comprehensive taxonomy, powerful data networking and visualization tools, WiserEarth helps to map and connect 1000s of organizations around the globe that are working for a more just and sustainable world. WiserEarth helps you easily find who is working on what and where, and connects you to communities of action where your work can become more effective, coordinated and visible.

How was the directory created?

The information gathered here has been collected from publicly available data on hubs and networks that exist on the Internet, as well as primary keyword research using search engines. Data for these 100,000 + organizations have been gathered by staff, interns, volunteers, and WiserEarth members from around the world, or submitted to the site directly by organizations themselves.

What type of organizations are listed?

WiserEarth lists NGOs, businesses, governments agencies, educational organizations, research institutes, faith based organizations, networks, coalitions, foundations, media organizations, student organizations, UN organization and also community- and village-based organizations. The main criteria for listing is that the organization must work in the field of social justice and/or sustainability, and the mission statement must be focused on overcoming inequality or addressing environmental harm.

How complete is the directory?

WiserEarth houses the largest international, free and editable directory of organizations working towards social and environmental justice. WE (the WiserEarth community) hope it will grow from the 110,000 + organizations that exist now to the estimated more than one million such organizations worldwide.

Can you show me a good example of an organization listing?

Here's an example of an organization listing and a network visualization of related organizations, people, resources, events, jobs, solutions and wikipages. Click image to see the live interactive page.

Who makes a profit from the directory?

Nobody. WiserEarth is a non-commercial, not-for-profit project.

How can I help expand and maintain the directory?

You can help by adding organizations in which you are involved, or whose work inspires you. You can help by ensuring that information in those organization pages remains accurate, relevant and up to date by editing as necessary. WiserEarth Editors do a lot of that work, visit the group if you are interested.

Adding Organizations to the Directory

Why add a listing to the directory?

By adding an organization to the WiserEarth directory, you increase the visibility of this organization. This is especially true for organizations with limited or no online presence. It also allows you to not only talk about the organization but those the network of that organization (its members, its resources, its jobs).

We have a website already, why bother creating another online presence in WiserEarth?

The time commitment to create and maintain an organization profile is not great and you will receive the following benefits:

  • Brings visibility to donors, partners, volunteers, and job seekers - over 500,000 people visit WiserEarth each year, making 3.3 million pageviews looking for organizations like yours.
  • Improves search engine results for your own website - as the authoritative directory for organizations with a great deal of traffic and link-backs, listing your organization here can improve the likelihood of your website showing up in a Google or Yahoo search.
  • Allows to showcase your network - you can make visible your connections to other organizations and people, increasing the chances that someone will see your listing.
  • Allows you to share your resources - you can share for free files, photos, videos linked to your profile.

Does it cost money to have my organization listed?

No. Listing is free and we'll make sure it always stays that way. All we ask from you is to contribute content from your organization and perhaps invite your staff, supporters and volunteers to join the growing WiserEarth community.

How do I add an organization?

Click Add an organization in the left navigation bar under the 'Edit' section. You can also do that from within a group by clicking the 'Create' link on top of the module for organizations. For more, read this tutorial on adding and making best use of an organization entry.

Why was my organization listed?

A WiserEarth community member noticed that your organization is working toward bringing about a just and sustainable world and decided to add it into WiserEarth's directory to help people easily find it and know about what it does. If for some reason you think your organization has been included in error please send an email to support@wiserearth.org

WiserEarth users can then add your organization page to their group. Visit the organization tutorial for a detailed how to.

You can edit by clicking on the [Edit] links on each section of the page. You can add the finer details, modify Areas of Focus, or put some images, videos and links in the About section. Don't forget to click the 'Save' button when you're done editing.

Who can change the information in an organization listing?

Any member of WiserEarth can, once they've signed up for a user account. If you want to monitor changes to your organization listing, you can join WiserEarth and add your organization to your watchlist. A digest of edits will be sent to your WiserEarth message inbox or to your email. The email alert can be set to weekly, daily, as it happens, or none.

On the profile history of some listings, edits have been made by guest users. Who are they?

Guest users are organizational representatives that were provided with a temporary guest pass to make it easier for them to update their organization's general information and "About" section. Typically, we send out guest user invitations once a year to encourage organizations to update their profile on WiserEarth, but we do recommend that they create individual user accounts to allow them to access the full benefits of WiserEarth.

Can the information be locked from other users?

Only under certain circumstances can the record be locked. Vandalism is one of these circumstances. If an organization is constantly under attack of malicious edits then an admin can block either the member or lock the entire page.

Can I rate an organization?

Yes. You can do this via the comment section of an organization listing. Read here for when and how.

Can I mass email organizations?

No, that would be spamming, but you are free to contact them one at a time.
