Use GEMET thesaurus to select areas of focus + 2
Problem: WiserEarth needs to simplify its Areas of Focus both for easy of use and for localizing in different languages.
Solution: Adopt an existing classification scheme that is widely used and has been translated into other languages. For example, WiserEarth could simply base its area of focus on the GEMET thesaurus, extracting from it what pertains to areas of focus.
A thesaurus contains synonyms and sometimes antonyms. GEMET is the GEneral Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus. It has been developed by the European Topic Centre on Catalogue of Data Sources under contract to the European Environment Agency, and is currently published and managed by the European Environment Information and Observation Network.
GEMET is a compilation of several multilingual vocabularies, and has been designed as a general thesaurus, aiming to define a core general terminology for the environment. The current version is available in 22 languages, and contains over 6,000 descriptors.
GEMET is available to public in several formats. It can be browsed and searched on-line, accessed through Web services, or downloaded as HTML or SKOS files.

- A set of terms that are officially and internationally accepted worlwide.
- Translation already provided in 22 languages.

@Pierre: What is far better is to find something that already exists (liek you have) and make use of it. 22 languages and many terms in GEMETwill make it far easier to localize in different languages that having to do it all ourselves - especially if we are crowdsourcing the work. This is part of the reason I was so excited by the Earth Charter - not only does it narrow the number of AOFs down (a plus for localization / a minus for specificity) but the Earth Charter is translated into a number of languages.
GEMET might provide 'translations' of many of our AOF terms, and those that are not we could go about translating ourselves as part of translation groups for different languages.
So perhaps with your help and some of Bowo's guidance (since he's done lots of work in this area already) we should look at the overlap between GEMET and our AOFs and then think about next steps. Also, are you aware of any other taxonomies / glossaries that are similar to GEMET? |

You're write. It could be good to build a "sustainable development" thesaurus, which would integrate not only environment issues, but also social and economic issues. If a WE group would take the lead on the elaboration of such a thesaurus, it could be a valuable and recognized contribution to the global reflexion on sustainable development. I may be in position to propose such a group.

A good idea, one issue is that it doesn't seem to cover some of the social (as opposed to environmental) issues the AOFs cover. But I really like the fact that it is already translated into 22 languages - many of which are on our top ten.
