Why Donate to WiserEarth
WiserEarth was incubated with seed funding from a small group of donors who believed and recognized its potential. We are dedicated to helping make WiserEarth a true global resource, one that is freely accessible to all.
"There is nothing like WiserEarth. It is community directory made by us and for us,
and it has over 100,000 organizations working with just and lasting change.
It offers a platform for groups to discover and connect and strengthen the bonds that bring us together."
-Jon Ramer, WiserEarth member, Co-Founder of Interra Project.

Oops, should say 'expanded later'...
Please could comment editing be kept open for longer, perhaps a week would be fine? |

Two further thoughts in case it helps ramp up funding towards what's needed.
How to evolve WiserEarth with genuine built-in community involvement and dialogue? This is within reach. Editable connectable wikipages are powerful stuff, more powerful than we've seen so far on any site. Wiserearth is using them to allow the movement to reflect itself, its activities and ideas. I'd suggest simply extending that to include reflection on wiserearth's activities and ideas.
• This is already happening to a significant extent; • Needs an expression of wiserearth's activities and ideas - a plan. Don't worry if there's not been one before - can be brief and expended later as needed. • Needs a new main menu item, eg 'Get involved!'. • Needs a whole-community whole-mission group. That's it! |

Hi Peggy, we've been busy messaging each other now for a month and I've learnt that skype is shy about admitting when someone is on-line. Thanks for trying to get in touch even if it never happened. Perhaps our experience reinforces the need for a space for dialogue between all of us wanting to support wiserearth.
We could talk about the usefulness of having a space here where the community can work on the ideas for 'where wiserearth wants to go' including fundraising. This page isn't really the right place but there is no other place yet. |
|
James, I just sent you an email to set up a call. I will be offline shortly for a while. Looking forward to our conversation.

Thanks Peggy, there's more feedback in a may 25th internal message you may have missed. Happy to chat, mornings are good when I'm here, number on profile. We could talk about the usefulness of having a space here where the community can work on the ideas for 'where wiserearth wants to go' including fundraising. This page isn't really the right place but there is no other place yet.
The NCI page suggests that Jon's project was supported so maybe good to update one of the two? Sounds like maybe NCI no longer supports any of the list of 'past projects'? You must have a stack of more recent endorsements if another is needed.
Happy holidays! |
|
James, this is very valuable feedback. I would love to work with you on making this page better. Can we set up a time to call when i come back from vacation? I will change the budget to annual right away as it is indeed confusing and the numbers have changed since last year. Jon is not financially supported by WiserEarth.

Good to see a donate link coming up in the 'dashboard'. Also needs a permanent donate link in the main menu (it's as basic and vital as giving access to FAQs, tutorials and help pages!). On the groundspring page it's the donation that would be recurring, the donor is 'returning'. As mentioned in the editor group, the 'join us' option could be clearer about whether it's offering a newsletter or a membership invitation (there's not enough info collected to create an actual membership is there?).
Is Jon Ramer financially supported by wiserearth? The budget area is unclear. Unusual to give monthly expenses - why not annual, with a link to a more comprehensive report? Is the 'program' wiserearth? Is 'operations' non-wiserearth projects? Some potential donors may be interested to see wiserearth's plans, outlining how it intends to 'help this inspiring movement' really get moving. |
|
You could shift 'recent activity' in the 'about' menu over to 'explore'. Then put this page in 'about' as a 'donate' link. Other language versions will need tax deduction options outside the USA. Then the donate option will be available on pretty much every page without taking up any space as an 'advert'.
Would suggest that your funding could usefully look ahead more than one year. My guess is that you need much more money for a much faster technical development and to keep up with your vast expansion plans. Wiserearth is a super important project that needs to run at full steam! |
|
I've been loitering around wiserearth for a couple of years and this is the first time I've bumped into this page. Wiserearth is such a critically important project and apparently in need of vastly more technical capacity so that perhaps the 'donate/invest' message could be made more noticeable? Or did you get a money tree ;-)

@David: These are smart questions to ask. We have funding for approximately one year and of course will be raising money for the following year during that period However, the actual cost of running the servers (approx $35K/year) is less than 10% of our total budget - we spend the vast majority on development and outreach activities. Should we find ourselves without sufficient funds to run as we currently do we would redirect funding towards simply maintaining our servers for a couple of years. We have been considering raising a 'keep the servers running' endowment and putting our code on escrow. Hope that helps. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. The bottom line - our servers will be running in two years!

Hello, I'm considering using Wiser Earth for creating a group centered around a 2-year project for adapting forest management to climate change. I am concerned about investing time and energy into creating, developing, and administering a group if a year down the road, Wiser Earth goes offline and my group along with it. For how long does Wiser Earth currently have funding? What happens if it goes offline? Thanks!
