Routemap: support and education toolkit

Access Privileges

Access is currently restricted to the following group(s):

Given the distributed nature of all the Transition initiatives' activities, their independence and diversity of needs, we need to consider a support and education tool of some form.

Possibly a routemap/decision tree kind of thing, starting:

1. Do you want to set your own site up or set up a simple presence on the Network/Regional hub?

2. If you want to set your own site up, what technical expertise do you have?

3. You have a Drupal person, here is the drupal support pages/group/advice/templates...

4... etc..

This can only be sustainable and relevant if it is self-supporting and part of the process...

From Sean Fitzgerald, Transition Australia:

"...  a decentralised approach and empower groups to be autonomous with their online presence, and focus on providing guidelines, resources and support to help local initiatives choose, set-up, manage and facilitate their own site..."

- Hosting options - self-hosted vs free web services - and their pros and cons
- Sustainability considerations - energy consumption of various options, green hosting etc.
- Ethical considerations - taking advantage of "free" Web 2.0 tools is fine, but what are the hidden costs in terms of advertising being supported, the "green-ness" of the companies, their profligate use of energy and resources etc. (the risk of the sudden demise of free tools is already mentioned)
- Free software - what is it, why it's a good idea to use it, where to find examples etc.
- The importance of open content, and the technical means to support that - not locking content behind log-ins, providing or turning on RSS feeds, CC licensing etc.
- Open standards for file formats, media codecs etc.- why it's important to use them
- Accessibility considerations  - disabled access, computer/bandwidth limitations etc. A toughy in the era of the multimedia web and broadband access for developed nations, but always good to keep in mind

It might also be worth offering some support on other types of social software (as opposed to main web presence/platform) commonly used such as Twitter, Facebook etc.

From survey:

"... big help would be for guidelines, starting points, briefing specs, suggestions for SIMPLE ways of doing things so that the sense of powerlessness when an IT superstar says 'this is the best way' and you have a gut feeling that this will leave you forever running round in hi-tec circles not being able to do the simplest thing..."

Hosting of files:

can be done in WE with access to any (semi-private (read only)) group

Welcome. From what I hear Earth Island Institute has gone this route - plus they have a master group for all their sponsored projects, and each project has an organizational listing. You may want to check them out as a model.

Thanks for the tip!

@Ed: You might want to use WiserEarth as a fileserver to host key documents. You could use a read-only (semi-private) group and link to the download button of a resource. That way when someone clicks on the link it simply opens up - no WiserEarth User Interface. But the added bonus, beyond the fact that a group of people are collating the key content, is that these resources are available on any WiserEarth group and accessible through the upcoming WiserEarth API.
