Badge and Logo Designs

Access Privileges

Access is currently restricted to the following group(s):

Hello everyone,

We'd like to have a little fun here in providing our services to the larger WiserEarth community. If you have some ideas, graphic skills and spare time, help us design a badge for WiserEarth Editors. We can put this in our profile pages' About section. Can't wait to see your ideas.

~ Bowo

p.s. we may want to expand this to the entire WiserEarth community the way Yelp is doing it, but that's just a thought and for later.

Some criteria for the badge (add your edits here or in comment section):

  • an owl should be in it (ask why!)
  • size in pixels (anyone has experience in this?)
  • has to work well in small and large size
  • has to be translatable into other languages / cultures
  • anything else?

Feeling creative?

Add your designs here:

Other type of badge design that could come in handy for WE members (for future badge design work):

  • "View my profile on...." (facebook, twitter, linkedin, myspace, couchsurfing, etc, etc.). See Angus'es profile to give you an idea.

This has been on my mind for awhile! I found this interesting division of badges as well. It would be neat if WiserEarth users had "reputations". : http://www.spanishdict.com/users/achievements Will keep thinking.

I don't think it is very wise to put pictures here, wich are under a non-commercial CC-License. This would make the badge created with them also under this license, and thus it cannot be used on any page, wich has any commercial background, like Google Ads on it or so.

If it has "attribution" in the license, you will have to write the name of the artist to every badge (oh, and you forgot to do this here on this page).

You could ask the artists, if they give it free.

But this way it's only unwise, sorry.

@Kerry:

Fabulous!

For pixel size, I was thinking that what we need for the editors badge is something with more width. The Yelp-style icons would probably be best for future 'compliments' buttons (insightful commenter, helpful wiserearthling, etc.).

Bingo!... on the owl thing :)

Fyi, there was a time when I thought that all the owls in WiserEarth (stock avatars, editors group logo...) has something to do with Otus the owl on top of Paul's son's head (see Paul's profile).... There's just no "owls are wise" thing here at home... :)

Btw, I also added another useful kind of badge for user profiles, namely the "View my profile on...." badges. This is based on a members's feedback via email. Something to do later.

Anyone else interested?

This sounds really fun. Maybe I can help experiment with this next month.

RE: pixel size, I looked around on this out of curiosity, seems the standard sizes are 16x16, 24x24, 32x32, 48x48, 128x128 for things like Mac and Windows icons.

Other criteria: open-source file(?), RGB, perhaps has one dominant color theme, vector graphic for easily adjustable size(?).

An owl because owls are "wise"?
