David Suzuki Keynote Address
Edit this Page
His presentation was inspirational and memorable. He had been asked to talk about Sustainability within a Generation (a report from the David Suzuki Foundation that can be accessed on line), but chose to talk about core issues instead. Some gems:
"This is the defining moment of our species."
"To think globally is overwhelming. We have to think locally and act locally to have any global effect."
"It makes no sense to pay $90 a ton to put garbage into a landfill and pay nothing to put garbage into the air."
"Climate change is a symptom of the way we perceive the world around us."
"Humans are the most numerous mammals on earth (even more than rats or mice or rabbits)."
"The lack of response of the media (to scientific reports) is terrifying."
"Our prosperity is not sustainable."
David Suzuki talked of the wisdom he had learned from studying with First Nation peoples. There was much talk both days about regaining their view that we have a sacred responsibility protect the Earth if we want the Earth to protect us.
