Forum or discussion board evolved +3

Edit this Page

Could be better for discussion board to organize:

1. Topics

1.1 Posts with categories (info, thinks, proposals...) with attach options

1.2 Coments with valoration (vote system, digg system...)

Administration options:

- Possibility to review posts (for admin groups)

- Possibility to reply posts or coments with categories of replies or tags (implemented, approved, rejected, qüestion...) for administrators or groups of members...

Other:

- The fòrum, events, resources, wikis and other of a group are always on group page, now is like a link to a fòrum inside of the general page of Wiserearth, I think that is a little confuse.

I kind a like the simplicity of unthreaded discussion we have now. I think a feature upgrade that would accommodate this suggestion and not needing extensive coding upgrade would be to allow multiple discussions box (like multiple bulletin boards). This way, each discussions box can be designated for a certain discussion theme. If however, phpBB can be customized in a way as not to make it too complex, I think I'm in support of it.

The other parts of the suggestion (rating, moderation, social bookmarking) has already been implemented or is being suggested for implementation in other suggestion pages.

Arams other concern of how different section of a group's homepage looks similar, can perhaps be solved by adding an icon for each section?

@Honore: The simplicity of the current discussion boards does have something to recommend it. Also would be relatively easier to integrate SMS messaging into the current structure than a threaded discussion. Might consider keeping the existing software for SMS integrated discussion forums which require a more linear single threaded approach.

@ Honore: I don't see a problem with having legacy discussions on an old piece of software left live and then making all new discussions work off of a new open source software like PhpBB. Could also port old discussions into the new software - but what is the value?

Glad this has been brought up.  I've been championing for a better discussion forum system.  Would love to integrate PhpBB into our site, as it's the premier open source discussion system out there.  It offers quite a number of advanced features that would encompass the suggestions in this idea, without us having to build from the ground up.  However, given that we already have existing content, it does bring up some tricky issues of how well it'd integrate with everything else on the site.  Something worth exploring, as I think we're quickly hitting upon quite a number of limitations with our discussion system.
