Rationale : The WiserEarth article on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiserEarth has been deleted three times in 2007 and 2008 by WP administrators under various reasons : spam/advertising, not enough content, no assertion of notability. This page is there to build a mockup of the article we would like to see on WP, and then to upload it to WP when we judge it meets Wikipedia quality requirements regarding content, NPOV (Neutral Point Of View, are we able to achieve that I wonder), quoting sources "asserting notability" etc.

Draft below

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WiserEarth

WiserEarth is a user generated directory for the social and environmental movement [1], tracking the work of non-profit around the world . The online platform maps and connects non-governmental organizations (NGOs), businesses, governments, and individuals addressing global issues such as climate change, poverty, the environment, peace, water, hunger, social justice, conservation, human rights and more. WISER is an acronym for World Index of Social and Environmental Responsibility. WiserEarth is supported and funded by the Natural Capital Institute .

History
The seed of the idea of WiserEarth is explained by Paul Hawken in his book "Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Movement in the World Came Into Being, and How No One Saw it Coming.. The author had collected business cards, during numerous meetings and conferences, from thousands of organizations. He figured that these cards could form the core of a data base of what he calls the "movement" . In 2005, he convened a team of editors with the objective to gather data from 100,000 environment and social justice organizations around the world. The resulting directory was launched on Earth Day in 2007. Other functionalities were added later to the website, such as social networking service and groupware tools.

Facts and figures
As of December 2008, WiserEarth provided a data base of more than 110,000 organizations worldwide, over 20,000 registered members, and more than 1,000 groups, with content organized in 46 areas of focus and 379 sub-areas . The area of focus organisation is currently under revision, a simpler organisation matching  the Earth Charter principles is under discussion.

Website features
WiserEarth is organized as a wiki. Registered members can edit the data base entries, add new organizations and linked resources, participate in discussions, and create groups. The website is  non-profit, advertising free, and community-driven. The data is published under a Creative Commons 3.0 license.

Peggy knows the history - Utsav - you are correct from what I know.
Sm_avatar
Good find! Never heard of it before. I think others can explain the connection and help with the references needed so we can put it up there in WP.
Sm_avatar
Do correct me if have wrongly assumed anything.

I read somewhere that WE was revamped from another online database - Sustainable Civil Society Project an earlier NCI project.  WE incorporated social networking capabilities that were previously unavailable. Maybe this too would make a notable include in the article for Wikipedia.

I have found one reference (http://www.wellbuiltweb.com/page.php?id=5) to the older project but missed out where i read (where it specifically mentions that WE is built around SCSP).

Hope this is of interest.

Well done, Angus. I intended to do that ASAP, but you beat me at it :))

There are still a few typos/style to correct, but it's much better! Thanks

Sm_avatar
I integrated the Fundamental Problem piece into history so it isn't so problematic!
Sm_avatar

To all potential WP editors of WE-related stuff

1. Please don't edit the WP article as anonymous users.

2. Please don't re-write the article including non-NPOV statements

The english article has being edited yesterday by anonymous user (someone from WE ?), adding clearly WE-biased content such as "The Fundamental Problem".  We have made a draft here to avoid the article to be deleted again, it would be sad to have the article attacked again ...

THANKS!

Let's just keep track here of the various postings on Wikipedia that mention WiserEarth. How does that sound?
Sm_avatar

I would urge people to not make further edits here, on this page, but to make a wikipedia account and make edits there, on wikipedia, as that article is the active document, and concensus there (on wikipedia) will build its sustainability as an article there.

Wikipedia also seems superior in it's ability to track changes to the document v. wiserearth (a major reason why I use wikipedia over WiserEarth as a wiki site), so if you make changes here, it has been harder to transfer those editorial changes and tweaks to the Wikipedia article.

Is there a way to create this page as an 'archive page' ?

Peace,

The French version is on-line.

Still 250+ languages to go :))

Next?

Thanks so much Bernard and rkmlai to getting this onto Wikipedia.

- Thanks to change "visit cards" to "business cards". French "cartes de visite" misled me, oops.

- I guess we stop editing the article here now. Do we keep this page for the record?

- I will make the translation for the French Wikipedia as soon as I find the bandwidth. And we have people here able to translate it in Chinese, Portuguese, Javanese, Spanish ... Cool!

Sm_avatar

It is uploaded http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiserEarth

Who wants to translate it into another language on another non-english wikipedia page ?

Sm_avatar

@Bedy:

Thanks for the initial fleshing out.

@Ming:

@Bernard:

 • Any easy guide on adding WP-specific markups? (so anyone can mimic what Ming just did on the draft?)
 • Referencing Earth Charter is OK. Might want to add later on that the simplification based on Earth Charter would be accompanied by adding flexibility via keyword tagging.

Sm_avatar
Added reference to the Earth Charter. is it OK?
Sm_avatar
Seems to me the article can be uploaded now. Fine-tuning editing and formatting will be easier to do in Wikipedia. Categories are to be added. And while we are at it, related articles need a brush-up too!
Sm_avatar

are 'visit cards' aka http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_card or something else ?

Once we get an article up on Wikipedia, we can then also put it on the list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites

hopefully my additions of the wiki markup tags will assist in the copyediting and conversion to a wikipedia article.

leads to the "citation needed template

How do we increase 'neutrality'? Do we need to go as far as adding a 'controversy' / 'criticism' section? Or will more sources/references do the job?

Perhaps we can learn from these pages?

Peggy

I'd seen this article and had the same idea, but although the content is OK by GreenWikia standards, and of course by WE standards, I don't think it is completely OK by Wikipedia standards. I'm afraid its viewpoint would not be considered completely "neutral" by many WP administrators.
