The WISER Platform

This article is locked

The WISER Platform is the technology that makes the collective awareness, support, and communication possible. The software and information generated by WISER is created under open source standards as governed by the Open Source Initiative (OSI). As of April 3rd, 2008, WiserEarth released an open source version of its platform code for the community to freely download and develop, available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/wiserplatform/

The documentation is available here.

The WiserPlatform opensource project was made possible in part by the financial contribution of The Biomimicry Institute.

Open source standards allow modification and further redistribution of the code and software without payment, but restrict users from selling it. Any and all iterative improvements made to the code by subsequent users are available to all users. The theory of open source is simple: when code is subject to modification and change by many programmers, it rapidly evolves and improves. It is the same principle that informs all of WISER. If we can provide a means to freely exchange information and communicate ideas, it will vastly accelerate understanding, social evolution, and adaptation.

The core elements of the platform that will be common to all uses are:

  • Relational database structure housing information on organizations, businesses, individuals, responsible practices, and resources including books, conferences, events, other databases, definitions, magazines, articles, podcasts, streaming audio and video, maps, research reports, and educational opportunities.
  • Categorization of and ability to search all information by areas of interest, geography, organization type, industry, scope of activity, responsible practices, and profession or pursuit (for individuals).
  • Community editing and contribution tools to allow content to grow organically.
  • User management to track the history of all edits and establish an editing hierarchy based on community-voted credibility ratings.
  • Open ID to allow users and user preferences to move seamlessly between all WISER applications.
  • Arrangements of entities and resources into Interest Portals around areas of interest, industries, practices, and regions. These portals would allow for the incorporation of features to increase connectivity and discover synergies between organizations, businesses, the government, and individuals.

Hi all,

The primary mode of discussion for WiserPlatform is the Sourceforge mailing list ( wiserplatform-support@lists.sourceforge.net )

That is where all release announcements will be posted.

Here is the latest update for build-r69

Dears,

I found that a new realease r69 has been uploaded to sourceforge.net without any notification, also when I extract the compressed file I didn't found any changes log, I don't know what has been changed in the new version.

Wiserplatform.org isn't active anymore?

There is now a WiserPlatform Support mailing list.

You need to signup here (https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/wiserplatform-support)

Thank you for your interest.

Dears,

I have some questions:

1. About I18N, L10N:
    1. What is the possiblity to change the language of the web site?
    2. If I create a group and I need to write "about (special_text)" of this group in different languages, is there any way to do that?
    3. Same as 2, what is the posiblity to create an entity with I18N capablity.
2. For articles, what does "is_wide" flag mean?

Regards,
Sm_avatar

Hey Aram,

Our main developer for the open source platform code just posted up his first set of documentation - take a look, hopefully it should address many questions you have about it:

Thanks,

I hav investigated and I understand some ...

To enter at backend of wiser platform you should:

1) Login (at /web/)

2) go to url /backend/

3) You can choose one of three edit options:

  • Create a new Area of Focus
  • Edit an existing Area of Focus
  • Add / Edit system Entities

But There are a lot of other configs and options that you didn't edit diretly?

- Home page edit

- Google maps api key

- moduls active o disable ...

- network visualization (I remember maybe is not opensource? Unfortunatelly)

I have installed a copy of Wiserplatform in other server and I'm surprised because seems poor than wiserearth. How can I modify the Home, for example? How I can create AoF portals? How can I translate the app? Events are missing?

In the next weeks I will try to study with a php programer but if anyone can help me before...

I'm interested to develop a sister site (in catalan language with some improvements) exchanging data with wiserearth...

We have developed a beta portal (visit the web) based on some media apps (OpenServer, BCC) and we can try to implement in wiserplatform if the tecnology is relativly friendly with this.

Sm_avatar

Could be interesting implement an option to make suggestions in any page or module an then centrilse all this suggestions to central suggestion page.

Personally I'm interested to implement a Wiser Earth located in a region of Catalony, Spain. And I think many other regions could be interested to make the same. May be to avoid the disconection of all these installations of Wiser earth(s) we could implement a system to conect them. I think Portals of Focus area is the better way to conect this platforms...

Sorry, but my english is worth.

this is a great moment!  I am downloading the code now to take a look.  Congratulations.

WiserEarth's is now fully open source!  The platform code has just been posted on SourceForge into a nice 4mb tar package for the community download.  We'll post up the accompanying documentation and support files as soon we can!

Thanks,

I'm very excited to know this project! I'm from Spain in a rural zone and we are looking for a platform similar. We have contact with the projects UnlimitedWorld (http://unltdworld.com/) and Aroundme Identity Server (barnraiser.org). But this project seems to be more powerful and mature. Excuse my bad english, but we are interested to collaborate in the development of this open-source project. Is the project ready to implement a catalan version we have now a budget around 12.000 eur. And we can traduce the app and develop some improvements if you are interested.

Hey lonnystern,
All our web development is done in house, with a very small team of developers (3). The roles have been split out as follows: Arash Boostani - Technical Director, Hilary Karls - Developer, Rehan Iftikhar - Open Source Developer. I work on the Quality Assurance piece, but that is a role we are looking to transition over for a part-time hire.

Cheers,
Honore

Was web development done internally, or did you seek out the help of a third party provider? If so, who?

Wendy,

Take a look here http://www.wiserearth.org/article/d4616679443647767999981a8b3dd14f on the December 5th 2007 update on this issue.

Has there been any update on releasing the source code? When is it likely to happen?

Will the code for the whole site be released? Including the 'visualize' feature?
Sm_avatar
I am curious when the open source agreement will be available, when the documentation and code will be available and a description of the APIs or other way to to access the data will be available?

the terms of use seem to restrict the publication of data n other sites.

I am eager to support the effort to open source the project in any way that I can
