Best Practices Portal for Conservation Yellow Pages

Edit this Page

To find best practices and associated organizations, groups, services providers and funders a user would need a portal. A draft example of a portal can be found below. The first page shoulds the search page and the second a hypothetical result of a seach.

Questions by Jennifer Redington, response by Angus Parker

1. What is the difference between a simple search and an advanced search?

Simple search allows google like word based search, Advanced search allows selection of a series of drop down menus that specify specific fields in the Best Practice (i.e. it’s more targeted)

2. I'm not sure I understand the relationship between Best Practice (Puppets), Service providers (Rare) and Projects (Rajan Pulan, Indonesia, etc.). Are you only listing projects conducted by Rare? What happens if you have different organizations besides Rare using puppets? Would they be listed? How are the results sorted- on a payment or frequency model ie Google?

A Best Practice will be developed by an organization, group or possibly an individual, but could be supported by service providers that are or are not the same list of people, and implemented by yet again another set of characters. It’s fine and in fact desirable to have a different set of people implementing a Best Practice than those who designed it. The support system around a Best Practice would be evident in the Network area of the Best Practice. It would look something like this when visualized but could also be a text list view.

3. Are 'funders' a key data element? should that be a specific searchable data element?

Funders would be a relationship between a Best Practice and an Organization, Group or Person. At the moment it doesn’t exist in WiserEarth. It would be searchable through selecting a specific Best Practice.

4. Will you show the search criteria used for the results attained somehow? For example, from the search results shown, I don't know if the user searched on Threat, Action, Habitat, etc. Do you think that matters?

The advanced search criteria would be retained in memory and could be revised. Also the search could be saved to a watchlist and any updates (e.g. New Best Practices) would trigger an email alert to the user.

5. What is the purposed of the Category items represent on the left hand side of slide 2? If I click on one after my search results come back, with it resort or reorganize the data on the results side of the page?

Resort, reorganize data (like Kayak.com)
