Implemented! - User setting for first/last order of comment display +3
This article is locked
Suggestion implemented - user now have the choice of sorting from first to last, or last to first. We're not quite there yet on keeping a log file for all users to keep track of what they've already viewed, but that would be a really cool idea, and something we'll consider when we work on a recommendation system for users.
-----------------------------------------
Original suggestion:
When you read a forum thread the system shows you the latest comment first. A lot of people prefer that, but I'm not one of them. I have to essentially read the conversation from bottom to top which I find awkward. Some forum software like vBulletin allows the user to choose which order they want to see things.
Ultimately, for the forum software to be efficient for repeat use, the system should keep a log file of everything someone has looked at so that when you return to a conversation you can just tell it to show the new stuff since your last visit. But that requires much deeper programming. So for now, similarly to having followed links change color, a user preference stting like that would really help.

Well, the reason was that comments are traditionally displayed as we see it now - just about every blog you come across has the lastest comment first rather than last. Forums are the traditional medium for the first to last ordering. If we were to implement this for comments, we'd likely keep the current sorting as default, but allow the users to flip it as they see fit.

@ Honore: Why not do the same thing for comments?

Suggestion implemented and is now up on the site. Users can toggle between ascending or descending, with oldest to latest being the default sorting order. Thanks to John Coate for suggesting the idea!

Part of Release 26, which is our current release. Will post back once this fix is implemented across the website.

We'll definitely flip the order of comments in our next release, but also allow users to toggle back and forth between the ascending/descending order that they prefer. The log file is a very cool idea, and likely requires significant planning and programming to implement. We'll have to table that idea for a later round.

Good idea. My +1

Hey, all:
Hey, John: Yeah, the latest comment first is awkward and probably can even cut down on the likelihood of comments being read. I have even done that, commenting on something that was addressed previously or missing something I would have wished to comment on. Being able to set the order by the viewer is a good idea.
