Threaded discussions +3

Edit this Page

Problem: I don't know if this is the right term ... however, it would be ideal if it was possible to reply directly to an individual's posting and thus create a thread of conversation on different ideas suggested. (I posted this somewhere else but cannot locate where. I still have not been able to easily navigate through the different groups I belong to and locate the different comments I am responding to... UI very unintuitive for me ...altho i admit i am getting better with more familiarity... but for a new user it would be daunting! (IMO)

Solution: Threaded discussiosn. One can reply to someone's particular comment and create a sub-thread in a discussion while remaining on the same page.

Example from elsewhere: anyone? (edit here)

Related suggestion that seems to be solved with threaded discussion: Title and Link for Comments

My vote for this as I've experienced the trouble of navigating a long discussion and identifying the sub-topics. Would be great to have a threaded discussions, especially in groups as Angus mentioned, where there will be many people.

I've also created another suggestion page for the ability to reply to discussion from email (suggested by Benjammin): Ability to subscribe to discussions via email, and reply to discussions from email

I'm with David and others. Critical functionality at least for group discussions. Maybe not for comments connected to other WE content.

Hey, all:

One thing I noticed very early is the vast opportunity to comment, with practically every page supplied with Comment space. This has good points and not-so-good. This has been a problem for me on more than one occasion, with parallel strings of Comments in separate places. What I read here, though, sounds different.

At the risk of being labeled a "labeler", I wish a better name could be devised for what I think is being suggested. What I see on other sites with blogs and comments is a branching setup or an outline which shows comments attached to previous relevant comments, rather just in a long linear string of comments with the only connection being just the title and general content.

The only way in WE to refer readers to comments I am responding to is to either quote the comment or tell folks to scroll to the comment. What I perceive here is the desire to have the ability to click on a comment, and then respond directly in sequence to that comment. So if someone wanted to say 'Yeah, Dave, right', or 'You are So-o-o-o dumb!' (or both!), people could click on this box, and the context is not lost.

Do I have this correct, and is there a more descriptive label WE can apply to this? Are there some example websites to be shared? Links?

I completely agree with Benjamin here and this could be how we deepen our ability to have conversations and dialogue with each other and to have it scale for participation of larger numbers. To me this gets at some of the questions around Wiser's identity. Are our conversations leading us somewhere in our efforts to share information, learn, disagree, cocreate and move into wise action? I believe so.

Thanks for raising this!

Benjammin,

I had a similar suggestion as yours on "subscribe and reply via email" which has been aggregated to the "Suggestions for Groups" page at http://www.wiserearth.org/article/618f922d0533163ad1bb76522e41cd21/group/suggestions
but has not been put in a separate suggestion page.

Would you mind creating a dedicated page for this suggestion, since I think this is different to what Deborah (boatsie) suggested as "threaded discussion" which has nothing to do with email. I will definitely support it, as I agree it will be a HUGE improvement to WiserEarth and would make WE a strong rival to other "general" list serve providers.

I would add to it the ability to import the discussions from the other list serves to WE (Google can do this to Yahoo list serves). It will be a major technical work, but would prove worthy of the effort, as this alone will bring so many active people into WE, and all the work they're doing and the knowledge and network they have into WE. This I guess will not hurt other providers that much, since WE only wants people and list serves relevant to it's mission of bringing about a just and sustanable world, and not all list serves with all those topics.

I have thought of this alot, and the idea of having threaded discussion is SO valuable.
Many groups have list serves on yahoo and google groups, to get those folks to have those discussions on this site will only work when the seem between ones email and the discussion forums is made.
Meaning that when you post a comment on a discussion you can subscribe so that replies are sent to your email,
then when you receive a WE email you can reply to it through your email and the reply is posted on the WE site.
This way a user doesn't have to take the extra step to get on the site to reply to discussions.
Yahoo and google do this, so it seems WE should be able as well.

THIS WOULD BE HUGE, We have over 350 people in the SF area as apart our permaculture community, over 200 in the east bay and over 1200 international subscribers to the openpermaculture list serve, to name a few.... I am apart of over 12 list serves for the permaculture community and so many discussions yet how to follow?
This is where Wiser earth could be a tool for the communities that use it.

It is easier to follow what is happening in a threaded discussion. I bet this is already an item on the list for the programmers, held back only because it involves quite a bit of work. If I were a programmer, I would think, well, so what about the current discussions? I guess they all have to be converted to a single file thread - and that alone will take a week. Still, it would seem a must have item.
