Deduplication / Merge Tool +1
Issue:
When a user comes across two similar / identical listings they need a simple way to merge the content and networks into a single record. e.g. In the case of these two records Pronatura Chiapas A.C. and Pronatura Chiapas which I believe are the same organization how would one go about removing one organization but capturing the content and network links from the other?
Worry is that without this kind of tool the org directory will get rapidly corrupted and users will get frustrated with multiple listings.
Proposed Solution:
Salesforce.com has some great tools to merge contacts and org records. Basically you search by name, select the records you want to merge, select which data from which record you want to over-write the other (or just choice one record overwrites the other). Then the merge results in one record with all the data of the previous two. Would need to merge network links as well through similar process.
In the case of WE I would suggest the user can perform this work on any entity type, except user, group, and organization. In the case of organization they could do the merge but it would be pending an editors review?

@Honore: Where is the duplicate button? Does it require you to note where the duplicate copy is? Still think we should rely on users to do the work - a la Salesforce, which can be blessed by an Editor.

We don't have a merge tool, that's true, but we do have one that marks a record as a duplicate. That's generally been the way we've handled duplication of records around the site.
The salesforce method of merging and choosing which data you want to keep probably would be very feasible. Our revision history already does this - when you compare a previous revision with an existing one, it'll show the differences in the structured field. So, we can probably tweak that into allowing users to merge selectively.

I like this as it allow users to participate in content monitoring and management and help the tasks of editors. I also like the idea that any user can merge duplicate/similar organization but it would be pending an editors review.

Hey Angus,
If you look at the right-side column, there's a section titled "Status". If you click on the drop-down menu, you'll see the various ways you can set a page. It's an ability only offered to WiserEarth administrators and Editors. But since you're already an editor, you should be able to use this function.
Cheers,
Honore
