All of the entities on WE are currently categorized by areas of focus. In addition to choosing areas of focus, users should be able to choose tags (linkable custom keywords)

Why is "Gender Equity" not also listed under the "Men" section?
Race and Ethnicity

jdaviescoates: The very fact you're all having this discussion seems to suggest that the people behind WISER haven't really grokked tagging - you simply can't create a taxonomy that works for everyone but should empower users to classify any object in any way they like using tagging like in delicious etc etc. sigh.

axil: ...) second the suggestion that a more cloud-like tagging-capable taxonomy be allowed. Thank you.
akreider: I used to be a believer in having a fixed set of categories. Now I'm beginning to think that letting users create their own tags is a good idea. Perhaps allowing people to do both is best - I'm going to try and do that on my site. You can have one or more administrators who make sure that a newly added thing (group/event/person) is tied to the official category, while also letting users add their own tags.

While I agree that user generated tagging is beneficial I think that to some extent we have it with keywords. I would also say that we need to encourage the use of AoFs (however imperfect some of them may be) because that is what will be the backbone of future content recommendations to groups and people and is distinctive about the platform.

That would definitely help expand WE! We should think of a more coordinated use, and strategy, of those functions.

Totally agree. Also, what is the viability of incorporating a function like Technorati or Reddit so that work taking place within the WE community can be recommended to the broader web community?

Agree on this one too. Tag clouds encourage exploring if nothing else. Done well they aid searches. I think that if the goal of the site is for the users to 'take over' then user tagging is essential.

Hey, all:
Hey, Michael: Well, we have kicked this around quite a bit, and although I am not clear on how it would be managed so it does not become chaotic and distracting, I would give it a thumbs up! David Messages done with sustainable energy, with Wind and Sun! |

I think this is really important. I know this is not one of those quick-fixes we can see implemented in the near-term, and that it will require more discussion.

I'd second Angus'es opinion. I think completing existing fields (including keywords) properly is a lot of work already for most users. I'd choose tweaking WE's search engine (and interface) and streamlining WE's overall UI compared to adding tagging capability.
P.S. I'm one of those who don't use tags very often. Yet at least.
