Implemented: Limit AOF tagging to 10 per record +2

Edit this Page

Implemented:

Any new AoF selection is now limited to a max of 10 selections.  Existing records that have more than 10 will be allowed to keep their selections, but if they try to change their selections, they will be prompted that the maximum is 10 and they'll be asked to change their selections.

-------------------------------------------------

Problem: Spammers are linking their profiles / wikipages to all AOFs to raise visibility in browse searches. In addition, a user/resource linked to all or many AOFs essentially makes the link to any AOF meaningless.

Solution: Limit the number of AOFs any record on WiserEarth can be tagged with to 10 for all records besides users and 30 for users. This will encourage people to be specific and make the AOF tagging system relevant for searches. Make this change retroactive when any record is being edited. May also want to see how many records this will affect on the system to have a sense of the scale of the issue.

How I can help: Willing to crunch some numbers and provide some analysis of the issue.

Any thoughts?

Agree, simplicity is best. 10 AOFs should be enough to identify a wide breadth of interests.

I do like 20 for member profiles, only because as a person, you're bound to have a wide range of interests.  But we'll do 10 just to make it easy, and keep it until we find we need more for members.

In hindsight, I think that 10 would make more sense. Once some for of recommendation engine is running - expanding from the 'Suggested Content' group module, people are going to be incentivized to overtag their contributions to get them 'seen'. Having a limit of 10 makes sure people narrow down the focus to truly relevant AOFs and make sure that the content will be appropriate for other users to view.

We had talked about 10 for entities other than Member profiles which would be 20, but then settled on across the board 20. I think that gives plenty of scope - but still narrows it down sufficiently to b meaningful.

Is it 10 or 20?  I heard 20 in our last go-around.  This is in the project queue on TRAC - it's a small fix, but we won't be geting to it until groups are done.

@Camilla: That is a much bigger question (simplification of the AOF list). I can say that the existing 379 AOFs present a great hurdle for localization of the platform - is we have to translate all of that content into a new language we will have much slower going. I would advocate simplification of the top level of the AOFs into the Earth Charter's 4 main and/or 12 principles and then boil down the existing AOFs into the 53 sub-principles - that seems like a manageable number. Still I'm sure people would passsionately defend the idea of a more precise taxonomy (i.e. the 379 AOFs we have now).

Thanks for this posting Angus.

Bowo, you did some magnificent work when you came up with a higher level taxonomy that would eliminate the need to select from the 400 areas of focus - maybe it is time that we considered it's implementation (due to lack of IT resources, this was never implemented. Perhaps this can now be revisted (ideally alongside a home page redesign :))

There was also a suggestion a while back to allow users to include 'expert in, work in, interested' (or something along those lines) so that users can differentiate between the levels of AOFs that they have selected.

Anyway, I support a revision of the current methodology - however, it could need a bigger rehaul than just limiting it to 20.

@Angus: that sounds like a good workaround. Should speed up the AoF selection/tagging process several folds. Wonder how the suggestion algorithm will look like and how much coding will be needed to achieve that.

@Bowo: The easy way to select AOFs is to type in a keyword and it narrows down the list to only relevant AOFs. I think that is a good work around.

I think this, or something like this, is definitely needed to make the AoF tagging meaningful and useful. This will become more relevant I imagine, as we add more AoF to the taxonomy and improve the categorization, and thus, allow for more precise tagging of an entity. The next problem when that happens is how do we make the AoF selection/tagging process less overwhelming (e.g. eliminating need to scroll down a long list of AoF by using collapsible list, etc.). My +1.
