Retire + rating system: +1
Problem
The + rating system is not readily transparent, nor accurate. Further, it confuses people, discouraging them from using the correct (official) rating system.
Solution
Officially retire the + rating system: stop using it! If an administrator could transform all the + ratings into actual ratings, that would be best, as that would bring transparency and accuracy to the rating system. I think this should be a high priority, given WiserEarth's principles.

The key in general to all improvements on WiserEarth is to test the ideas and learn from observed community behavior. I've come around to realize that the best, cleanest, most logical functionality often doesn't survive the reality of actual member use!

You see what I mean. Now even this suggestion is apparently using the + rating... Thanks Angus. :/

I think people are missing my point. It is not that people are voting positive and negative on an article, it is that people are not using the official system, be it stars or thumbs. The +-in-the-title system is prone to inaccuracy and is not transparent: that's the real problem. I've seen this old system used recently and the current system neglected.
It was previously not clear to me at all that the current rating system is actually experimental. If that's the case, we need an official and functional, not an experimental, rating system. This is critical to WE feedback, and to WE!
PS: As I've previously suggested on more than one occasion, I'm all for a thumbs up/down system. |

Agree with Honore - the + system is only being used on the Suggestions group and is a vestige from before we had the official rating system. In some ways the most likely improvement to the official system - thumbs up / down - is a return to the + approach so I'm not too hung up on this for now.

Hmm...well, ratings were more an experimental add-on to see how the community would respond to it. In light of the type of information on our site, a 5 star rating doesn't seem to mesh quite as well as a thumbs up/thumbs down system. I wouldn't put too much concern over this - the community as a whole will figure out what works best for them, and I don't think there's been too many uses of the "+" system lately, so this shouldn't be too much an issue going forward.

Yes, transition is usually a mess, and not much we can do (I think) to automate this. Can you bare with it? I think the main thing is the idea/suggestion and the discussion/consensus around it. And yes, let's consciously stop using the +system in favor of the *system.
