The Green Century Institute (GCI) is dedicated to the evolution of sustainable communities in the 21st century by initiating next generation living examples of ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable urban developments. Our primary avenues toward the realization of these goals have been the development of the Califia Ecocity project proposal, and the following supporting educational projects:

1) Califia Sketchbook Design Competition

The purpose of developing the Califia Sketchbook Design Competition is to express to a wide spectrum of people what life will be like in Califia, a proposed next generation sustainable urban development. People from around the world are invited to enter a conceptual sketch conveying a "slice-of-life" within Califia, revealing smarter ways of building, powering, and maintaining the urban fabric. We believe more direct public involvement in the design of our future living spaces will be the first step in the successful sustainable developments of the future.

2) Ecocity World Summit 2008

People from all over the globe will come together with visionaries and activists of the international sustainability community at the 7th International World Ecocity Summit which will return to the Bay Area in 2008. Positioned to be the tipping point of a movement, World Ecocity Summit 2008 will focus on key actions both cities and their citizens can take to rebuild our human habitat in balance with living systems. In partnership with Ecocity Builders, the founders of the conference series.

3) Sustainable Communities Salon Series

A four-part Salon Series in collaboration with the Green Building Exchange on the following topics:
Infrastructure: Water and Energy, Living Ecocity Examples, Food and Permaculture, Green Building and Finance.

4) Sustainable Cities and Design Portal

GCI has joined Paul Hawken's WiserEarth project to build the leading resource on the web for transforming our cities towards a sustainable future.
