Habitat for Humanity - Involving Diverse Populations

Edit this Page

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.  Habitat invites people of all backgrounds, races and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need.  As a Christian organization, how can Habitat for Humanity encourage youth of all faith traditions to participate in eliminating poverty?  NICO young adults had the following advice for working with youth-

  • Building activities are a great way to engage older youth/young adults from diverse backgrounds.  Create as many opportunities as possible for youth to be involved in physically building a project - even if it is not at the Habitat build site.
  • Go to them.  Encourage youth from diverse backgrounds to get involved at all levels of an event- and have the first activities be at their place of worship, etc.
  • Don't try to make events for youth look like adult events - lots of flexibility and time to just be together is good!
