A global platform for recounting our stories. A platform where we can re-imagine other worlds

The Vision

Some of the solutions to today's current global economic crisis are going to emerge from new, creative and collaborative ways of solving the problems we (as global citizens of the earth) currently face. It will involve creating a new order, an alternative model; essentially re-imagining a different world. It is our responsibility to imagine what this new world will look like; a world which will give new hope, ignite ideas and inspire. We should use this opportunity for each of us to study, use, transform and to enrich the ideas that are already being imagined in this new world, and to adapt these to the needs of our own cultures.

The Project

The creation of a global commons of solutions, best practices and ideas; essentially an online platform that will help us to share our experiences for creating a new world.

Beyond being just a communication tool, this platform must also serve a new vision of the world where human beings and nature live in harmony and where values for creating equality for all of human kind are shared by all.

How will the Platform be used?

  • It will be used to share theoretical and practical knowledge and experiences for addressing the global issues of the day; poverty, human rights, ...LIST...
  • It will be used by NGOs, community-based organizations.....LIST ... and socially responsible businesses as well as members of civil society as a collaborative platform for the sharing of know-how and best practices.
  • The development of the platform will respect free and open standards. It will guarantee the possibility for all to reproduce and use the contents. It will fully support the freedom of expression and diversity.

We Invite You to Join Us

We invite those who would like to be involved in building a global commons of knowledge to join us in creating, growing and sharing the ideas and solutions across this platform.

Who currently supports this project?

Several organisations, networks and collectives are already working on this vision including;

I have created the article wiki Possible Worlds Specification
Sm_avatar

So the 2 big points are:

  • Item 1 - How and who will put the data
  • tem 2 - How will people access to this data

In Item 1 :

I've got your point : "We need to remember though, that creating a solution page can be a laborious process requiring understanding" so we need to benefit from the already existing solutions one way or an other (people ready to put data or pouring their data inside the new system).

Your proposal of groups and subgroups is may be good but seems to be heavy if it is done manually. May be it could be done automatically by an import of a list of categories like the GEMET proposed by Camilla. (to check)

In Item 2 :

I did not see the Areas of Focus listing and it is corresponding to what I proposed as "a multiple top-down access". It has the advantage to be defined by the people putting their data by tags, so it should be relatively correct. As a first look it is not very public-facing.

I am going to test the Areas of Focus listing searching a specific information : I'd like to learn how to grow bio carottes (a problem for our common garden)

I go to the tag Agriculture and Farming then the sub tag Gardening then I can see the 204 Resources.

I use the search with the keywords : carottes and I have no resource on it.

I do a new search with the keywords : grow vegetables and I get 34 answers but most of them does not relate to what I search or transfer me to a book web site.

I try on google search :

- If I go to wikipedia I know all about the carotte history and production in the world but I still don't know how to grow it

- I go on a site dedicated but I have general information but not the solution to avoid having so many other "bad" plants invading the carottes.

By clicking on the link to a forum I have see that there is a Area of Focus Suggestions group group which must discuss the point with familiar administrators there !

I think that we should gather one way or the other or connect this group to the Possible Worlds Project

Let's create the wikipage for the specification so we keep track of our ideas in a structured way.

Sm_avatar

Here's a more detailed exploration of how WiserEarth can readily be a platform for Possible Worlds.

1. Establish this group, www.wiserearth.org/group/possible_worlds as the main group

2. Map www.possible-worlds.org to point here. So people visiting that URL will be taken here automatically.

3. Modify the group's homepage to be more public-facing / outward-looking / engaging. So people coming here will have an idea that they can immediately contribute their solutions to Possible World's solutions database/directory

4. Create sub-groups of this group for each solutions area. Each sub-groups will center on the solutions module in the group (and probably, the discussions module too). Here are some examples of possible sub-groups:

  • Sustainable Home Solutions --> www.wiserearth.org/group/sustainablehome
  • Poverty Alleviation Solutions --> www.wiserearth.org/group/povertyalleviation
  • Reforestation Solutions --> www.wiserearth.org/group/reforestation
  • Renewable Energy Solutions --> www.wiserearth.org/group/renewableenergy
  • .... etc. etc.
  • (we can even encourage others to start their own solutions sub-groups with guidelines supplied by the main group)

5. Develop narratives/stories/articles for each sub-groups. In essence weaving together solutions in that area to paint pictures of a world where those solutions are implemented. This can be done on the sub-group's homepage, or in wikipages within them.

6. Develop broader narrative(s) in the main group painting pictures of possible worlds.

7. Outreaching to other solutions providers/databases and see if they're willing to port over their solutions to Possible Worlds / WiserEarth. Catalytic Communities is a good example of an organization that is willing to do so.

8. Outreach to just about any organization, website, blog, writer, changemaker, who have even just one solution for one particular problem to create a solution page in Possible Worlds / WiserEarth.

We need to remember though, that creating a solution page can be a laborious process requiring understanding, research, writing, editing, and re-editing, and re-editing. But thankfully, every solution page in WiserEarth acts like a wiki, meaning, every WiserEarth member can help edit and improve it over time.

Thoughts?

Sm_avatar

Hi Jean-Paul,

Not sure what you mean with "The solutions directory is a search access but I think that a multiple top-down access is also required."

One thing for sure is, WiserEarth members can freely add their solutions to the directory and tag them with WiserEarth's Areas of Focus. If you look at our Areas of Focus listing, you will find that everything in WiserEarth (including solutions) is accessible from the 'top-down', in 'multiple' ways. Is this what you have in mind?

(note: it turns out that solutions are not included yet in the Areas of Focus listing. You will need to click on any Area of Focus portal then find how many solutions is tagged with that Areas of Focus. e.g. Agroecology portal has 4 solutions.)

Moreover, in this Possible Worlds group, there's a solution module (lower-right) where you can readily add solutions into. So, in a way, this group already acts as a solutions directory/database (also as a subset of the larger WiserEarth's solutions directory/database). Going a step further, you can also create several sub-groups--each containing solutions for a particular area/topic/issue---and thus effectively, create a categorized solutions database, with this Possible Worlds group as the main entrance.

Fyi, here are some more info on WiserEarth's solutions directory:

If this is not what you have in mind, then let's work on the specifications, which is just a new wikipage away.
Sm_avatar

Hi Bowo,

Yes, we can establish the specifications

The solutions directory is a search access but I think that a multiple top-down access is also required.

Lets right it in the specifications. But in this case : where can we put the specification ? Please create the area for this.

.

In parallele we can list the already existing databases / sites solutions. May be one is already very close to what is needed and could join them.

I begin to put some at the end of the english part of the main text of this page. Please add others.

Hello everyone,

Pardon me for I don't understand French yet, so had to translate this online.

From what I'm reading, it appears that WiserEarth already fulfill some (even most) of the requirements? Particularly the solutions directory. I would consider finding ways to work together, instead of duplicating efforts. As an example, Catalytic Communities is considering to port their solutions directory to WiserEarth, so they can focus more on their work, and less on technical issues. They're also helping to translate WiserEarth to Portuguese.

Or am I reading (the translation) incorrectly? Either way, I think it would be useful to establish the specifications as Jean-Paul suggested below, so we can explore the possibilities.

http://ecoloinfo.com/2009/02/16/comptes-nationaux-du-bien-etre-en-france-alors-heureuse/

Non?
