Rapid sharing widget +4

Edit this Page
| Back to Suggestions Group |

Problem: Proliferating sites for sharing content make it hard to keep up (no Facebook button on WE for example), plus we have no way to share back to WE when we are trolling the net.

Solution: Came across this sharing portal see: http://sharethis.com/getbutton which has both buttons and an API for sharing content.

Benefits over current system:

  • Single button - saves real estate
• Sharing options updated as new sites come online - we could even add WE as an option in their API ...
  • Can share to emails
  • API - allows customization
  • Has back end reporting

Thank you - now to make WE one of the options on the share this widget. When or if WE becomes open social compatible this shouldnt be too hard to do.

Update for everyone - I was just testing out the share this button, completing the registration process and all, and it seems to be a very easy implementation if I'm correct.  It was just a snippet of code to paste into the code.  If that's all that's needed, we can do this very quickly.

However, putting it into the Actions Bar would be something else.  The location isn't as hard as greying out the icon to match look and feel of our current set of actions.  All the same, I'll request it in the ticket and see what our developers can do.

At the moment, they allow up to 35 websites to choose.  The ones I've selected are:
The ones I've left off:
Do we see any sites that we should include into the sharethis widget?

@Bowo: Like the idea of radically simplier registration but wonder who would need it if they came in via 'Share this' plug in on another site  - most people would be WE users I suspect. Other issue is around transparency - really do think that we need to know who is posting content. An alternative approach is to grant users of other social networks (i.e. Facebook) posting rights. So for example, if I were John Doe of Facebook I could post to WE and the comment would say at the top "John Doe (Facebook)"

Small addition: Instead of "Share this", perhaps "Share this page" would be more intuitive. And instead of the standard popping-out "Share this" page, popping-under (like the "Add to groups" link) would be more consistent with current interface of WE. Guess this should be possible as I read about the possibility to customize the javascript actions in the developer section of "Share this" website.

I second Angus'es idea on adding WiserEarth to "Share this" page. The problem would be the fact that someone must register with WE first before they can add content. Solution for this could perhaps be:

1. Radically simplifying the registration process by requesting only email address, username and password. This should be included in the same content addition page that's invoked from "Share this". Content will be saved as "draft" (and can be previewed) but will not be a part of WE database until an email confirmation of the registration process is done. Upon confirmation/activation, the "draft" will automatically be in the database. An automatic message/reminder to update/complete the user profile page can be sent out the way they are sent out at the moment.

2. Create a space for content added by anonymous, unregistered users via "Share this" and mark each addition automatically as "in discussion", so that  WE editors and admins can review for inclusion to the database.

3. To close a loophole in solution No.1 in the case that no email confirmation is done, the "drafts" should be automatically included in the "space" suggested in No.2. This way, either the creator of the page, or any WE editor/admin, can ensure that the "draft" gets proper attention for inclusion into the database.

4. If that someone in No.1 is already a registered WE user, the "email, username, password" fields for registration in should be changed to "username and password" fields for logging in. Or more precisely, to enable the selection of either "registration" or "log in" within the same page without the need to reload the whole page. An AJAX interface for this section seems nice.

5. Yet another possibility is to give an option to add content without the need to register. This is for people who want to contribute but don't feel comfortable enough to register with WiserEarth yet. So, No.4 should give three options: "register and add", "log in and add" or "just add for review by WiserEarth editors/admins".

Summing up, the process of adding content with "Share this" would be:
1. Click "Share this" icon/link from any web page
2. Click "WiserEarth" icon/link in the pop-out box
3. Open a "draft" resource page auto-populated with page title, URL, today's date, and AOFs selection, a text box for the about section, and fill in necessary fields to either "register and add", "log in and add" or "just add for review by WiserEarth editors/admins".
4. Content be marked as "in discussion" and placed in a space for review.
5. Email confirmation or WE editors/admins approval for inclusion into WE database.

These solutions seems a lot of coding-work to do and may not need to be prioritized in the short term, but will I predict be increasingly of value as WiserEarth becomes more popular and people/users want an easier and more intuitive way to add content to WE.

By the way, any idea on simplifying this?

P.S: For the "Share this page" pop-out page inside WE, the WE icon will logically be unnecessary.

Also, if we take this one step forward - assuming users had homepages with feeds - WiserEarth may want to become one of the icons on the ShareThis page..... I could see this as a more intuitive way of creating resources - generating a resource automatically - populate name from title, URL, date as today, and then just opening a dialogue for selecting AOFs and a text box for the about section.

I like Bowo's idea of putting a greyed out share this icon in the Actions section - instead of the current placement above the status bar. More intuitive.

Hey Angus - yes, we'd likely consolidate it all to one button, since it opens up neatly.  It'll save us room to better highlight what the button would do, and we can do more with the space to draw attention to the feature.  I don't think I saw any button missing from Share this that we currently have, so I believe it should cover all our bases and then some.

Love it too, +1

@Honore: Thanks for the vote. Does this mean we get rid of all the other icons like Digg etc? It would mean a cleaner UI....
Sm_avatar
This is an excellent tool to have.  It falls in line with many of the strategic benchmarks we've outlined during the WiserEarth partners meeting, and it's clear how our developers should be implementing it.  I will slot it into an upcoming release cycle.

Sharing content from WE is a must.  Lets do this!
Sm_avatar
They also have a wordpress specific functionality - which if we used that blog as the open source platform for blocks might be an option.
Sm_avatar
Two added benefits which overlaps with another suggestion is:
1. The ability to share any page with friends via email. Have added this in the about section above.
2. The 'Post' tab (in the popping out box) contains links that enable users to post content to their profiles on the selected service(s). The current posting options are Twitter, MySpace, Facebook, and WordPress.

Goood idea. My +1.

We can add the sharethis icon, gray it out, add a "Share this" link (which will pop-out various content sharing sites) and put the icon and link in the "Actions" box. Like example below (icon needs graying out).

From http://sharethis.com/publisher it's said that they cover 33 social web services (including the 8 that WiserEarth is using).

This seems like a great idea.

Looks like they are a promising endeavor as well: http://gigaom.com/2008/03/13/sharethis-raises-15-million/

Alex King (the original developer of ShareThis) is a household name in the Wordpress development community. I think we can trust their system design and extensibility.

I guess we could just replace all the digg / delicious/ etc. icons and put in this button?
