Add feature: People who liked this also liked...

Problem

It is difficult for a user to readily find related materials on WE that she/he would be interested in.

Solution

More than [a] simple "ratings" however, is my favourite feature called"Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought...". This [Amazon.com feature] allows for serendipitous discoverability (as opposed to "most popular" or "highest rated") for closely related items beyond those that showed up in a search. Reinvented for WE, this should look like "Users who liked this org/group/resource/event/wikipage/job also liked..." ("liked" = gave a good rating and/or has a comment for it rated as "helpful"). The "Areas of Focus" and "Keywords" field of each entities (org, resource, etc.) should also be factored in to the algorithm.

I like your idea here better because it is interactive, much more frequently encountered, and highly variable--not so static and removed. Whenever someone rates an article, a suggested list of articles appears. Very cool! And it would probably entice people to rate things more. (Perhaps even more so if that "people who dislike this also dislike..." list was implemented too (which I'm sure would be a super-easy addition. It'd be fun to see, me thinks. :)

Thanks for transporting it here Bret. This is an old old idea and I'm thinking can be part of a larger algorithm that takes into account various other variables? You've seen that on --> http://www.wiserearth.org/article/7dab12356f788b2b30119f85c6a372d9

I remember actually reading something about someone developing the reverse algorithm "people who dislike this also dislike..." or was it "if you like this, then you won't like these..."? Quite useful actually for the brave of heart (willing to venture into the unknown and 'expand' their horizon...). But probably not quite as useful for the majority.

Yes, there could be a little "Related content" link or some graphic that would appear after someone rates something positively. When clicked on, an information box would appear with the "People who liked this also liked..." links.

I figure these links would be based on something like the following logic.

  1. Make a list of all the other users who also voted positively on that content item.
  2. From that list of users, count the number of votes on all of the content items that they have also voted on positively.
  3. Link to the top 5 or 10 (or variable) content items from that list (sort by total number of positive votes per content item).
Note that a "thumbs down" list would not be very interesting: "People who disliked this also disliked...". :) I'm also not convinced that such a referral system would be good for comments, though it could be possible.
