Subject Line for wiserearth emails

Edit this Page

Update:

If not for our recent server upgrade issues, we would likely have implemented this suggestion into the site.  However, we are currently tied up working on some maintenance issues and site optimizations, but this idea has been slotted for the next opening in our project roadmap.

Dear Wiserearth tech staff:

I'd like to make a suggestion concerning the emails that can be sent through a wiserearth group.  Right now, it only says "elizd has sent you a message on wiserearth".  I am using my group, NorCal ARCSA, as a work group.  Given that I sometimes send multiple emails in a day, I would like my group to be a able to see the subject of the email.  Is it possible to change the function of the subject line to include the subject itself rather than just a notification of an email at large?  The current set up makes this group less functional for us, and people are missing a lot of info.

Many thanks,
Elizabeth

Subject line --> From [Member Name]: [Subject]

That would be ideal (see previous comments here), but I heard there's a limitation in the system on modifying the Sender field. Angus? Honore?

I like alternative #3 too, but with a slight modification:

Sender: "<userA full name> from WiserEarth"

Subject line: "[message title]"

Hi Elizd,

Just finally got a chance to talk to my developer (post Web 2.0 conference!) and we went over this feature.  It's actually quite complicated and would require some substantial re-coding, despite its surface simplificity.  However, that won't prevent us from working on it.  Right now, we're upgrading our infrastructure and it's a rather massive overhaul, with a lot of new coding changes that should make the re-coding much more possible.  The upgrade probably will take about 2-3 weeks, but once we're done with that upgrade, we'll work on this and I'm sure we can probably find a way to accommodate this change.  So if you're able to wait perhaps a month, I should have some good news for you.  I hope that timetable works - please let us know if you have questions or concerns!

Thanks,

Honore

Hey Elizd,

I'll talk to my developer to see if we can put the subject into the subject line for outgoing emails.  Should have an update for you likely by next week to see if this is a fix we can do quickly!

Sm_avatar

Just updated suggestion content above with the following:

Current incoming email:

Sender --> WiserEarth Message Alert

Subject line --> usernameA has sent you a message on WiserEarth

Solution:

Sender -->  WiserEarth Message Alert

Subject line --> From [Member Name]: [Subject]

Is this good for everyone? Or the one that Angus proposed in another comment thread?

Sender -->  WiserEarth Message Alert

Subject line --> From [Member Name] on WiserEarth: [Subject]

@Angus / Honore: Can we have this soon enough?

Sm_avatar
When do you think you might shift the subject lines?

On FB:

I installed the FB/WE widget but it is not clear from the FB end how to use it.  So instead, I made a Northern California American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association group with links to the WE site.

@Elizabeth: Great to hear you are staying with us for now!  In terms of replying to emails, we are going to make it more obvious how to do that in the bottom of the body of the email. But like most other email systems on Social Networks you cannot reply directly to the email address from which it is sent. That functionality will come with the ListServ within six months at the latest. Best, Angus

Sm_avatar

Good to hear that Elizabeth :)

You can help us by testing the features once they're released and provide any feedback you have to improve it further. And once we have the full listserv feature, invite your friends over to WE :)

Would you mind letting us know which group you're mentioning here and also the facebook page? Always curious to know how community members are using WE's tools.

Thanks,

Bowo

THANK YOU!

OUr group decided last night to spend another month with wiserearth, in the hopes the intercommunication can imporve through this and a better email reply system.  We like so many of the other features of wiserearth.  We just posted the wiserearth group to our facebook page.  Overtime, this will be a good plug for you guys as I know that our group is about to expand exponentially.

How can I help you all with this process?

Elizabeth

@Angus: Good idea with removing From/Subject in message body (when it's sent externally into email inbox). Looking forward to get this implemented.
Sm_avatar

@ Bowo / Elizabeth: Seems like we are all on the same page. The only difference I would make is to remove the From and Subject from the body of the message (only when it is sent externally). This is redundant and confusing. I made that suggestion in your other post in the group. Assuming we all agree I will talk with Honore and putting this into our development roadmap.

I like Number 3 as an option.

Sm_avatar

Hi Elizabeth. Thanks for your feedback. This makes sense to me too.

What if we change to something like "From userA on WiserEarth: ...message title...." ?

But since the sender is already identified as "WiserEarth Message Alert", I guess using "WiserEarth" on the subject line is kinda redundant. So, "From userA: [message title]" would be better?

Another option is to change the sender identity into "userA on WiserEarth" and quote the full WiserEarth message title in the email title.

In summary:

Current -->

Sender: "WiserEarth Message Alert" --- Subject line: "userA has sent you a message on WiserEarth"

Alternative 1 -->

Sender: "WiserEarth Message Alert" --- Subject line: "From userA on WiserEarth: [message title]"

Alternative 2 -->

Sender: "WiserEarth Message Alert" --- Subject line: "From userA: [message title]"

Alternative 3 -->

Sender: "userA on WiserEarth" --- Subject line: "[message title]"

Is there any other, better, alternative?

Using "Full name" or "First name" perhaps instead of "username"?

~Bowo
