He has been doing important work with farmers , advising them on growing healthy soil in Australia. Many farmers now using his ideas, based on biological farming techniques - ie helping the soil to live - are now in a much better position than they were previously when using expensive petrochemical fertilisers to try and achieve yields. In fact many farmers try his techniques, because when he talks with them about the problems that occur when the soil is not looked after, they recognise that these are exactly the problems that they are facing on the land.
Maarten recently left CSIRO where the focus is increasingly on research funded to promote genetic engineering of crops as a way to improve food production. This is completely the opposite approach that Dr Maarten Stapper has taken. ANd many farmers are now thankful that he is doing what he is in the Australian rural sector.
