GROCERY BILL - $8.00 A WEEK

Sure, 40 years ago when I was in my last year of college. My wife worked, I worked only on Saturdays, and we had to cut expenses to the bone. We bought the cheap, leafy green vegetables. Late at night I’d take a study break, grab my rod and reel and walk across the field separating our apartment in College Town from the American River. There was an eddy out of the current that I could almost always count on catching a big striped bass or channel catfish that would satisfy our need for protein.
Someone told me the other day that they spent $300. a week for groceries, nothing extravagant, for their family of four. I was dumbstruck!
With just my wife and I at the table, rarely buying any vegetables, being able to buy meats in quantity with the skills and knowledge of having been a meat-cutter for 15 years in my youth, I had no clue that grocery bills had come to this.No wonder people are so happy to be gifted with vegetables from my gardens!
Cheers,
