Archived-suggestion: Say more about the pictures on the home page +4

The pictures on the front are good and important because they give you something to latch onto when you go to the page. Indeed, the pictures and the images of the people are the only things that are 'pushed' to you when you go to wiserearth.com. Because of the small amount of 'hooks' on that page (which can lure someone into looking deeper), I would add a caption line under the pictures to say more about what is going on in them. It's a tried and true way to get people into the tent.
Like today, it says "Ecovillages" under a pic of a building. Well, what building is it? Where is it? Another says "Santa Barbara Permaculture Network" with some people standing in what looks like their community garden. But are they? What have they done that's worth hearing about?
There is life down in this site and the pics suggest that it's worth while to look around for it. But I think there should be more for the casual visitor to raise the odds that they will be more regular visitors.
And even me - hey I am obviously pretty motivated on behalf of WE. But it has trouble competing with other sites for my attention when I am looking for that little break to see what's going on around the net because I know I will have to hunt for it. So I know that someone with less motivation than I have is really not going to do it. So I say get more out front. Small captions is a good place to start and it wouldn't take much trouble for the benefit.

Home pg descriptions have been discontinued but the discussion on the home page should be continued. Discussions on the home page are ongoing...the staff here recognizes it could be better and a re-design is in the works

I'd like to see the option of using the pictures space (which is now changed daily) to become the first level active space in which active discussions are highlighted. Users to WE see immediately what work is immediately in process and thus have the opportunity to jump into some 'synchronistic' communication....
these "active' spaces could serve almost like 'tags" .... it would be great to have discussion taking place in active Recommended or Recent Discussion Boards (or as in blogs "Diaries") where participants could jump in and respond to threads ... I guess my point really is what can we do quickly and easily to engage users more immediately in direct interaction with work ... discussions ... |

Hey, Michael: So the Home page would have to be redesigned/expanded to accommodate captions? This does make sense, functionally and ironically, so it would have to take a place in line as one of those things for a future revision. I'll somehow tackle this suggestion...believe it not I've been thinking the same. I take care of the homepage 5 days a week now..and feel that it'd be fun to have a discussion on what's on it, or what could be on it.
Seeing that there is interest in doing this, tells me its worth my time to act as well. If anyone has a suggestion for a place to host these discussions let me know. Another group? haha. A blog? I don't think I could add a caption directly on the homepage but definitely elsewhere. |

Hey, John: Hmmm, yeah, this is something that has been on my mind since I joined, and one reason I seldom visit the Home page. Your term 'hooks' is appropriate. While I appreciate the clean, nice look of the page, it also seems somewhat plain, and more could be done to create some 'hooks', to do exactly what you suggest--going from 'casual' to 'regular'. Even the 'pitch' to join WE is not readily apparent. I suspect the photos are rather generic from a generic source, so real, factual captions may be hard to come by, such as what is found in a news outlet. But captions on any photo help the context, and add interest. I support the idea of improving the appearance of the Home page, and if even generic captions can be applied, it's a good idea!
