WiserEarth new page designs - looking for community feedback!

Edit this Page

WiserEarth wants your feedback

Following the WiserEarth 2009 User Survey we conducted earlier this year, we've been hard at work analyzing your suggestions and ideas in order to integrate them into some new designs for WiserEarth.

Based on the results of our research, we've created a series of preliminary mockups to showcase potential changes coming to the site and to allow us to improve usability on the site.  We've also taken into consideration ideas and suggestions gathered from previous surveys, telephone research with individual users and in-person user testing in creating these new designs.

We've attached the mockups as a series of PowerPoint slides. Please feel free to read through the "notes" section at the bottom of each slide for some additional information on what has been designed on each slide.

We would like you to give us feedback and share your thoughts on these designs. Your feedback will be invaluable in the final design process and in improving usability.

Let us know your thoughts about the features shown on these pages.

How can you help?

1. Let us know if any of the terminology used on any of the screens is confusing or unclear.

2. Let us know if there are any other parts of the screen design (e.g. navigation) that seem confusing or not easily usable.

3. Let us know if the features shown would be valuable to your work,, and if so, how you might use them. Or if not, why not.

4. Let us know if there's anything missing that you would like to see included on these designs.

How to share your comments

To make it easier to keep track of comments, we've split off the designs into separate wikipages.  Please post your comments on these WikiPages in the comments section, or if you'd prefer to comment privately, send us a message at info@wiserearth.org and let us know your thoughts.

We're looking to begin implementation of these designs in September, so let us know your feedback as soon as possible.

My assessments posted earlier a month ago still stand when I spent a couple hours responding.  The main point I offered is how do WE move from knowledge / information / talking nto a dynamic network of conversations taking effective actions in global human commitments in the mission critical projects We/Wiserearth  stand for in solidarity.

Thanks for all the design efforts, building and attention going into this platform I am appreciative to be a part of the conversation and respond with my authentic assessments.  My previous assessments were not meant as critical judgements rather what I see missing in social networks that I have experienced and participating in thus far.  Wiserearth has an opportunity to create a "blue ocean" possible possibility in the world.  How do yoy create a postive virus and pac man game that eats up email, Facebook, Twitter etc?  Get radically creative and reversing the streaming velocity of an ever narrowing inferno of human madness is going to take more than abstract talking and invitations to join a group and pray together.  From an emerging point of (awakening suppressed denial) self organizing activity is about doing, what effective action do I take today to address an immediate breakdown or participate in an opportunity.  Innovation happens in effective actions not politicians and leadership's new policy, plan, and law.   What I see missing in global social networks is human commitment (requests/promises/offers) to do business interactively person-to-person in diverse projects requiring supporting new visionary leaders to build the teams, collaborate in resources and distributive networks in a living value chain, and create some new "value" games in living together.

So far on Wiserearth, I make comments and very seldom hear a word back.  So I take the silence as my own personal breakdown of both being crazy, grandiose and verbose.  That may be true or not, I know I would rather be alone in my craziness than follow any leadership in this world.  And everyday I meet a stranger who integrates with my manner so I am an effective communicator on occasions. The other possibility is I may not be offering anything of value within the Wiserearth network?  And that's OK too!  No communication is a negative feeback loop where eventually one just moves their attention and will to expansion somewhere else.

What I desire in a living social global network (Wiserearth?) is circularity in the "value" I invite, offer and invest in conversations.  Not to be right or lead anything, to be responded to as an legitimate other in the conversation, so there is trust, satisfaction, closure, learning and revelatory relationship building in community.  If you members in Wiserearth are experiencing this please tell me where I am blind, deaf and dumb, I want to join in.  If I appear arrogant or aggressive in this begging prayer to reflect in this manner, please forgive me it's not my attention to perturb you. If I offer any value in these conversations please confirm because at this point its like talking to myself and that's exactly what I am trying to breakthrough as a member of Wiserearth and inside this computer I spend so many worthless moments in front of and in the very near future look forward to putting aside once and for all.

I appreciate the opportunity to be authentic and bless each of your intentions in bringing forth a wiserearth.

@Bowo: Not sure I agree that we should have this extra functionality of being able to redirect upon login to a number of different pages. Most social networking sites send you to a page with activity - a dashboard e.g. Facebook, Linked-In - the point is to get you into where the action is. None of them have the option of deciding where you land as a signed-in member. I suspect this would be a very little used piece of functionality if we were to have it on a settings page, and the downside is that it would complicate matters and require extra scarce programming time. Sending someone to a profile seems strange because presumably you know what is on your profile because you added the content. Especially with the new design (which eliminates comments on the profile*) there is even less reason to visit your own profile.I could see someone wanting to go directly to their Group - but that can be achieved with a bookmark or by quickly using the Groups menu.

* This makes sense because the comments section is being used by spammers and because these comments are not being read by members so it would be better to direct people towards sending messages.

@Angus: The request was to allow users to choose where to land on instead of defaulted. Some prefer profile, some prefer MyHome, some other might prefer homepage. Is that possible?

@Bowo: As currently envisioned it would stay the same - landing on MyHome (the renamed Dashboard). Does that make sense? Best, Angus

@Angus: The page to land on after signing in. Currently it's defaulted to homepage(?) (last time it was defaulted to dashboard). More on this thread.

@Bowo: What do you mean by landing page?

Is the landing page option in the notes already?

Just wanted to bring up an old suggestion that users should be given a choice of where to land on after login: (i) MyHome, (ii) Profile, (iii) Any other option? This would go to "Account settings" page I presume.

Hi Kamil,

Slide 3 - likely yes - we want to move more toward integrating accounts with other sites.  We're looking heavily into RPX as a way to do single sign-on, and that seems to also allow data to be shared across sites.  It's still in development right now, but hopefully that will mean the comments can be shared/syndicated across other sites.

Slide 14 - Regarding deleting multiple messages, no, not yet.  Our design hasn't gone as far as redesigning our inbox.  Right now, the focus is improving the message interface, so that people can add in multiple recipients and figure out more easily where to go to message someone.  We'll progress soon to redesigning the inbox!

Thanks your for feedback!

Slide 2 - none of the variations looks clean, functionality?

Slide 3 - like the possibility to comment and the person picture, is there an ability to share/send this content to our friends?

Slide 4 - like it

Slide 5 - looks fine

Slide 6 - looks fine, like the possibility to connect through Facebook and invite people by using contacts in the email account

Slide 7 - looks fine

Slide 8 - looks fine but maybe the search option withing the same page instead of a separate Find contact would be useful. The search could be by name (like on Facebook) or additionally by name of group or area of focues etc.

Slide 9 - looks fine

Slide 10- looks fine

Slide 11 - looks fine

Slide 12 - looks fine

Slide 13 - is there a function to mark all or a check box to delete chosen messages?

Slide 14 - looks fine

Thanks for all the hard work. Its a pleasure to contribute here.
