Integrate special characters +4

Subject: Internationalization and encoding

...

Anyway ... I started to add a few stuff with titles in French, and discovered that special characters are not handled very well to say the least.

See e.g. http://www.wiserearth.org/event/visualize/060e6dfe942c6b9674e4aba24800ae06/event

Where all "é" and "è" are corrupted in the page title, and simply missing in the graphical rendering.

Is not WE data base encoded in UTF-8? Well, if not, it should :))

And BTW, why the choice of proprietary tools (Flash) vs open standards (like SVG) in the graphical interface?

Stay tuned. More to come ...

Hey Bernard, I believe all our text is encoded in UTF-8, but there's special coding for the HTML page titles that strips away the encoding.  Let me see if this is a simple fix or something we would have to find a creative solution to get around a system restriction.

Yes, we need to get this sorted if we are make the site available in other languages.

Hi bvatant,

The network visualizer is an open source Flash app that we were able to customize for our needs, rather than developing one from scratch. If you're aware of an open source SVG utility that does something similar, please let us know. We're always on the lookout for new technology that can benefit the site.

As for the UTF-8 issue, yes, all of the data is stored as UTF-8 in the database, but it seems that the Flash app isn't rendering it consistently. You can see that the dropdown list in the top right shows the characters correctly, but the box in the center of the diagram and the title bar do not. I've asked our Flash developer to take a look. Thanks for the heads up.
