Available modules

17 modules are available for use in WiserEarth groups. You can use all of them or selectively depending on activities that your group is facilitating. What you initially have after creating your group depends on which layout was chosen at group creation process. You can add or remove modules anytime.

For a full listing with explanations, please go to the modules section of Group FAQ.

Adding new modules

Adding new modules is easy. Just go to "Administrator Tools" and click "Add New Modules". You will then be presented with a list of modules available to add to your group such as Suggested Content, Bulletin Board, Resources etc. The bulletin board module can be added more than once, i.e. you can have more than one bulletin board on your group.

Removing displayed modules

To remove a module, you need to hover your mouse over the pencil icon  on the right of a module's header. Click "Remove Module" and the module will be sent to the group's module repository, available to re-add later on with content intact as was before removal.

An exception is with the bulletin board modules. Currently, removing one will not enable you to re-add. We're working on making re-addition of bulletin boards with content and revision history intact.

Moving modules

To change the position of modules, you need to click (don't release) on the four-way arrow icon  on each module's header and then drag it into desired spot on the page.

When you drag a module around, dotted-blue guidelines will appear, and other modules will automatically shift place when you drag it on top of them. When you find a good place, simply drop it there by releasing your finger from your mouse button. This mouse operation by the way, is called "drag and drop".

Picture above shows the process of moving the chatterbox module from the right column to the left column between bulletin board and resources modules in a group with 66/33 or two-third layout. You will see dotted blue guidelines representing top column, left column and right column. You can place any module on any column. In this case, the chatterbox module is about to be dropped onto the left column.

Module positioning

Although any module can be positioned on any column in the layout, placing which, where and when, depends on how you'd like your group to look like and function. Some examples:

  • Bulletin boards is flexible and can be positioned anywhere on the group page.
  • Network visualizer on the other hand, might not be best positioned on the top column.
  • Chatterbox also doesn't look so good when positioned on top or too further down the page. It looks best on either left or right column.
These are just examples to give you some ideas on the importance of module positioning.

Module titling

Each module comes with a pre-defined title. You can change the title by clicking on it.

Changing title is important if you want to make your group more inviting. For example, "Discussions" can be changed to "Let's talk!", or "Bulletin Board" can be changed to "Welcome to Our Group!".

You can even delete the title all together! This usually comes in handy when you place a bulletin board on top to display a page-wide banner/picture.

Module length and setting

Each module can be customized via the "Edit Setting" option. Here's an example for the map module.

Make good use of bulletin boards

Among all available modules, the bulletin board module is the most flexible, and you can have more than one in your group. You can use it to highlight activities in your group, upcoming event / meeting, call to action, share videos and pictures, as a simple blog engine, or even to provide explanation for other modules. See how other groups are using it, then experiment with it.

Generally any script is not allowed at this point :(

I noticed that the widget you tried to embed was this one:

http://charterforcompassion.org/share/participate-online/embeddable-widget

Would it make sense to insert an image/badge instead and insert/update the # of people who affirmed manually (as text) with link to the page to give affirmation?

Oh, thats too bad. Puts a real crutch in my plan for our group.Thanks for the quick responce. Just to clarify,the code does show up in view after adding with the source editor,just won't let me save it. i tried editing the code but no joy. Its an external widget.

 <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="http://widgets.clearspring.com/o/4af95b8ceddf6dab/4afe2a35fe416c20/4afc508df274d815/8d3a4bc2" id="W4af95b8ceddf6dab4afe2a35fe416c20" width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://widgets.clearspring.com/o/4af95b8ceddf6dab/4afe2a35fe416c20/4afc508df274d815/8d3a4bc2" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="allowNetworking" value="all" /><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always" /></object>

So, where can I find a list of script that is not allowed? The video I embedded worked,after some code tweeking.

Hi Mona. Basically, we don't allow HTML embeds at this point for security reasons. But we're looking hard into enabling this in the near future. It just makes a lot of sense since there's so many good widgets and embeds out there. In particular, do you mind sharing what HTML code you were trying to embed?

What limitations are there on external embed code in the BB mod? I keep getting a security error when I try to embed html code. It won't let me save it.

~~~ To Janna:
We now have RSS for discussion threads and file uploading feature for just almost any WiserEarth entity (including groups).
~~~ To Teresa:
Are you "logged in" to WiserEarth?
If you are, you should see the blue "edit" link at the top-right corner of the bulletin board. Click it and you should be able to post content. If you are logged in but can not see the "edit" link, this may be a "bug" in WE's software, so please report it in the "Feedback >> Questions" forum @ http://wiserearth.org/forum/view/Questions

I tried to post some content into the Bulletin board with no luck. I am an admin of the group, currently its only member and would love to post a notice for when people begin to arrive!! Any thoughts.

As you continue to great work of broadening WiserEarth's operability, I'm hoping that rss feeds/readers as well as doc posting and group emailing by administrators/moderators will come online. It hadn't occurred to me that the latter two were not yet standard before I built our initial space. Now, I feel at a slight disadvantage over my fellow moderators over at Yahoo Groups.

That said, my aim is to support and grow this community along with the platform you've generously devised. THANK YOU for your work! Wishing you many thrills ahead!!! Janna
