Rationalize Event Type List

Problem: The type drop down list for events is too long and at times duplicative.

Solution: Reduce the number of types significantly to the ones that are really being used.

I did an analysis of the current public events (301) and what types they have. The results were as follows:

Then I did an analysis of the 'Other' category which showed a bunch of volunteer events, a number of trips type events, and pick-ups dates for donated items. None of them would break the 3% mark by themselves.

This suggests to me that we should only keep the following (plus 'meeting' for use in groups):

 

 

Conference 21.9%
Cultural/Community 5.6%
Lecture/Talk 9.6%
Meeting 1.3%
Movie 4%
Workshop/Training 35%
Other 22.6%

Updating this page to let the community know that we've begun implementation of this idea.  We'll make changes across the site to simplify the number of "types" - changes should be out within a week or two.  Thanks to everyone who's chimed in their ideas!

@Timonie/Bowo: Thanks for the feedback. The reality is that most other events site (e.g. MeetUp, Upcoming) do not have a type field except for Facebook. So I'm not even sure we need it given that you can tell from the title of most events what it is. But if we are going to keep the Type field then at least it should be a short list and easy to select from. Having a further Please specify for 'Other' seems unnecessary to me mostly because you could not do an advance search using it, and also because the title and about sections (which are searchable) would probably give it away as to what the event is.

Yes. Can/should we add "Please specify: ......." field for 'Other'?... and get whatever is filled in there in a group's event module listing? (If left empty... just show 'Other').
