Coping with multiple User IDs & Passwords

Edit this Page

As a guy working in Information Technology I have a large number of User IDs & Passwords, and with all the social networking sites and other things there are even more.  I used to try and keep the passwords all the same but everything seems to have different password standards now that makes synchronization pretty well impossible.  Besides, it's better security to keep them different.

Lately I have started to use a free portable application called KeePass that is installed on a USB stick (see below) that is attached to my car keys (that way it's always with me).

The application is part of the portableapps suite that includes Open Office amongst other tools like a Website Editor; GNU Cash (personal finance); etc.

When I put the USB stick into my laptop up comes the usual prompt...

I just double-click on "Start PortableApps" at this point and I get...

Then I Select KeePass (fifth from the top) and it opens up with a view of the passwords.

There is one other thing I'd recommend.  The same free KeePass application is available (to download from here) for the windows desktop so you can back up the encrypted database file onto your other PCs and install KeePass on there in case you misplace your USB stick.

I also have a couple of Ubuntu (linux) machines and there is a version available for them that can access the same encrypted password database on my memory stick (with the correct password of course).

Pretty cool post, Mike - there's definitely many users who find various ways to "remember" all their various passwords. I'm glad you wrote this post - what a great resource for people looking for ways to keep track of their logins!
