Account/Privacy settings design - seeking community feedback
WiserEarth seeks your feedback
(Skip the explanation and jump straight to downloading the new design)
One of the most often heard requests we've received has been around privacy. Community members want to keep certain information private, especially contact information. At the same time, we want to promote an open and welcoming community, rather than closed doors and no way to reach beyond your current network of contacts. To that end, we've created a new Account/Privacy settings page to incorporate some new privacy options, as well as some other often used features.
The first major change is we'll put up a "Close my account" link to allow users to self-deactivate their own account. This way, it'll be easily accessible to anyone who is looking to remove their account.
Next, you'll see the Profile Privacy section. We opted to keep it as simple and clean as possible. Basically, you can hide two sections of your profile - your Contact Information and your Latest Activity section. You can choose to share those sections with "Everyone" (meaning any visitor to WiserEarth), "Only my contacts" (meaning only people who are part of your network), or "No one" (in case you choose to keep that information available to only yourself). We think these options are a good start to offering privacy settings, and we'd love to hear what you think.
You'll also see a "Linked Accounts" section. We're still tinkering with this concept, but the general idea is to allow you to link up your Facebook, Twitter, and other service provider accounts. That way, you can use a single-sign ID for all the sites, rather than create individual logins. We're looking heavily at RPX's plugin to facilitate this function.
Last, you'll see a heavily revised Email Subscriptions section (formerly known as watchlists). The biggest change is that group watchlist emails will now come in separate email digests, rather than one big long email. This gives the user more control over which ones they want and which ones they want to turn off. We've also applied the same design toward the General email subscriptions. We hope this interface will make it clear what emails you're receiving, and how to turn off any that you don't want.
Before we progress much further - we want to give the community a chance to weigh in on their thoughts. Let us know what you think of these new designs. Look over the designs and let us know if the various features seem useful. And be sure to let us know if anything seems unclear or confusing - if the terminology used needs to be simpler, if something feels awkwardly placed, etc. Getting your general impressions, as well as any suggestions or questions you might have, will be invaluable as we fine-tune the final designs.

Bowo, Well let's address identity. I want Wiserearth to be a secure platform that respects and preserves my identity in a mood of trust, confidence and joyful concern. My promise is I will show authentically and share my honest assessments, and keep the commitments I make with others. I desire to have that as an agreed upon condition of satisfaction as a Wiserearth community.
Connecting to any social networks and being afraid to say who you really are honestly is a breakdown for me. maybe a solution is to have a welcoming committee of Wiserearth volunteers that reach out authentically and build trust and listen to the person's concerns! Now that's an innovation in social networking.
Recently I have joined "Linkin" after being on Twitter and Facebook and appreciate the experience because of how it approaches identity and maintains integrity of professional relations. What I appreciate about Linkin is the community agreement to care, feed and nurture one another's personal and professional identities. Once again I observe in terms of effective business design to effective team building and collaboration how important it is to build trust in one another's sincerity, competencies and openness to learning together. Linkin is an example of having an "open network" with "closed loops" building on trust where over time the "identity" builds a trusting identity and "testimonials" are declarations of trustworthiness of one's sincerity and promises in real life given freely by others.
So my assessment of all this Twitter following and followers in social networking is "arrested adolescent behaviors" where we play with our identities and recently my own experience it has revealed it's dangerous to one's own health and well being, and future identity which by the way I feel i am recovering from. I am no longer a NamelesWonderer beginning loving dog barking at the White House! Why play around even if your criminal get authentic and be real, we may be amazed how this will effect the healthcare crisis where all our problems require outside interventions.
My desire is to see Wiserearth water the elder wisdom and narrative of every human identity and to do so we need to agree that there is no way to do that by pretending or cultivating a platform of human commitment that allows self-deception in one another. In other words, as you have mentored me Bowo, there are times we make mistakes and restraint to community practices define us rather than limit us. And in reality what do each of us have that is precious and priceless is our identity. And the only way I see to establish trust in a chaotic world of predatory distrust is build it person-to-person. Thanks Patric |

@Honore: Hmm... I'm among people who don't quite fancy subscribing to daily digests... it gets unwieldy after a while... and I end up unsubscribing. But if the stats points that way, then let's obey and observe.
@Angus: Sounds good. |
@Bowo: As for the individual record bookmark ... I would agree its less than ideal the work around I proposed but suggest we build out what we have without it and then watch what the response is. We can always add the feature back in - in a smarter way - if needs be.

Hey Bowo, from looking over the general user preferences, only about 470 users have opted for a weekly frequency setting. That's about 1.5% of our total user base, so very few people really are using it. But really, it's also to simplify our system, as we've had bugs in the past with different frequency settings, and also to simplify the number of choices for our users. We can consider adding other frequency settings at a later point, but for now, we'll likely just stick with a daily one.
@Angus: I would agree that when the network is full, it becomes less useful. But I find people creating private groups as a workaround to 'gather and watch' their favorite pages to be less than ideal for at least two reasons:
Is there a better way? Do we need to think up some sort of bookmarking/list feature that doesn't get incorporated into one's network?
By the way, I just noticed that there is no frequency settings for the email digests. Are they real-time, daily, weekly, monthly? |
@Bowo: As you can see on the mock-ups the network vizualization remains but the idea is to restrict it to groups and people and possibly orgs / events as well. The problem at present is the network is too full for any meaningful use. So I would think that we would probably remove the ability to network yourself to things except people (i.e. friends), groups, orgs and events (attendance status). I don't think we would have a digest function for anything in a person's network - except as much as what a person's friends are doing. Having another digest would confuse matters and make it much harder to explain what is going on - in my opinion.....
@Angus: Would the ability to add a record to one's network still be there? --> This can then be streamed into something like "Network activity digest" (other than friends and groups)? Or would we go as far as remove the 'network' feature???
@ Ce / Bowo: I agree that there is value but it makes the user interface very complicated to understand / manage if you can watchlist at the record level and at the group level. The work around - for power users who want to watchlist specific items (like an org or resource not currently part of a group) would be to create a private group add those items to it and watchlist that. There will likely be a number of areas where we will be simplifying things (like this) to make the site more user friendly.
I would second Ce on this. There is value in being able to watchlist items beyond groups.
@Angus: but there are some resources that I currently have networked in my profile that are in WE but are not from any groups I am in? how do we deal with that? Are groups the central key? or is the database of WE the central thing? Also I like to be connected with some orgs to promote them to my network, but they may or may not be linked with groups I am in. Sorry for the confusion, maybe this question belongs in another section?
@Ce: We will look into some of the wording you suggested. In fact some of it already shows up in the template emails for these subscriptions.
@Ce: The idea is that you would no longer be able to watchlist a specific record (e.g. resource) but rather be automatically enrolled in 'watchlisting' i.e. digesting all activity of any group you join. It just seems much more intuitive that way for the average user. So as long as that resource you want to watch is part of a group there would be no problem. |
Straight forward, except for one thing. Do you have a "what's this" for the Linked Accounts of Facebook and Twitter? That one's not crystal clear to me. Does that mean my activity from WiserEarth gets posted on both those accounts? If I click on one of those names, do I get redirected to one of those sites? And how do I alter that option, is there a way to do that? Is there the option to block a particular user if you wanted to make your profile public to the rest of the community? |
@Angus Thanks for the explanation Angus - while I get some of the technology, I'm still behind on some of the jargon and understanding. Your explanation is pretty clear and helpful. I think that I think of the word "subscription" as something that I have actively joined, you know like for a group or an organisation or magazine. And I hadn't thought of watchlists as being another form of that.
Also I think of an email digest as a form of email that compiles all the messages over a day.week etc into one stream.
Would something like Friend Activity and Group Activity cover it? Also what about resources that are watchlisted in my profile that I've networked, where would they come up, if say they were not in a group in which I was a member? A separate category?
Not sure if this helps or makes it more confusing. Also it was the share my contact informaton with Noone that I was looking for!
Cheers Celeste |

@Ce:
Email subscriptions are basically your current watchlists broken down into one for your friend's activity and one each for every group you are a member of (i.e. group digest). You would be able to turn these emails on/off individually.
As for private email - that should be possible - you would turn off 'Forward WiserEarth messages to email' and then they would only go to your online inbox (not you real email account). Also you could choose, 'Share my contact information' with 'No one' which would hide your email from you WiserEarth network (i.e. friends)
What would make these clearer to you? Can you propose better wording?
Best, Angus |
What does email subscriptions mean? Can we still have an option for email where my email address is kept private, and messaging can continue with WE as it currently does straight to my user profile? I like the close your account option - very useful Not sure what group digest means for groups here in WE?

This looks great, but I think there are a few confusing sections -
Share with Everybody - Needs to be explained - will it be shared/searchable by everyone on WiserEarth, everyone searching WiserEarth, or anyone doing a Google search (really Everybody). I am thinking that very few will choose this option the way it is worded & if we want to encourage sharing it could be rephrased like "Share with WiserEarth's Community" (if that's what it does).
Linked Accounts - This one should also be hotlinked to explain what it does if you link - whatever you determine based on above & be sure it's clear what the benefit is - easy log in. Also explain that it does/(hopefully does not without your permission) send messages all of your other acct contact?
