Natural resources are any material part of the environment used to promote the welfare of humans or other species (e.g. freshwater, forests, soils, minerals, huntable species). Rarely, the term is used for crops or domesticated animals. Natural resources can be renewables (wind, water) or nonrenewable (oil, coal, some kinds of groundwater). Careful natural resource management from harvest to extract through manufacture and processing to use and recycle/waste management is a central theme of sustainability.
