Tropical Dry Forests
In tropical areas with seasonal drought are underappreciated tropical dry forests, now reduced to less than 4 million square kilometers. They are seasonal (dropping leaves in dry periods) with smaller size trees. In Africa and South America, fire and termites help shape the forests. Mexico and Bolivia harbor the most diverse tree species with great endemism of both plants and mammals. They are threatened by hunting, wildlife trade, and land conversion. The most exploited tree has been teak. Tropical dry forests conserve soil, provide for pollinators during temperate winters and dry seasons, and produce honey.
