The minerals industry is one of the most powerful globalized industries on the planet. It has been the focus of some of the most tense and violent conflicts between environmentalists, indigenous peoples, industrial promoters, sympathetic government politicians and, at times, the military. Minerals are so precious as raw materials for goods and items of trade that the industry has been awarded many subsidies, exempted from many environmental laws, and rarely concerned itself with sustainable mineral value chains. Antarctica is the best example of international cooperation to protect the mineral commons. |
