Aquarium Trade

Definition
About 2 million people keep aquariums, mostly stocked with wild-caught species. About two-thirds of the fish (as well as live coral) come from coral reefs. Fish are caught live often with the use of nonselective stupefactants. Shipping leads to high mortalities. The aquarium fish trade has a high potential for sustainable production and income generation in local villages. Certification and value-chain reorganization is needed to protect fish species.
