About 2 million people keep aquariums, mostly stocked with wild-caught species. About two-thirds of the fish (as well as live coral) come from coral reefs. Fish are caught live often with the use of nonselective stupefactants. Shipping leads to high mortalities.
Continuing to collect coral reef species will only contribute to the collapse of coral reefs, worldwide as the effects of global warming start to take their toll. Marine scientists are now in agreement that stressors to these systems need to be greatly reduced.
The luxury of keeping wild caught marine life captive for entertainment and decoration is no longer an option.
