Protected Areas, Individuals, Objects and Property

In an attempt to minimize unnecessary suffering and superfluous destruction, international humanitarian law has attempted to define who and what should not be the targets during armed conflict. Protected areas include undefended locales, hospitals, natural environments, demilitarized areas, declared "safety areas," and areas claiming neutrality. Protected objects and property include medical units, places of worship, cultural buildings, infrastructure essential to the survival of the civilian population, infrastructure that can cause excessive danger (e.g. nuclear power plants, dams). Protected persons should include the wounded, sick, medical and religious personnel, parliamentarians, relief organizations and civilians. Of course, in actual armed conflicts, these rules can be very difficult to apply.

National Iraqi Assistance Center provides free humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people in order that they may rebuild their lives and their country. Our relationships with Iraqi Ministries, foreign embassies, NGOs, IOs, PVOs and civil military entities allow us to acquire and distribute humanitarian assistance effectively to truly needy Iraqis.

International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War is the only international medical organization dedicated to preventing nuclear war and abolishing nuclear weapons. We recognize that the catastrophic health and environmental consequences of a nuclear war are at the extreme end of a continuum of armed violence that undermines health and security. IPPNW is committed to ending war and advancing understanding of the causes of armed conflict from a public health perspective.

"There are no politics in war. Politics is the luxury of the safe-at-home. War is a lottery of survival.
