Wildlife Management

Wildlife is an ambiguous label, usually applied to mammals, birds, and fish that are harvested by humans. Wildlife, in the United States, focuses on migratory birds, fur-bearing mammals, game fish, game animals, and, more recently, protection of nongame species. Wildlife managers work to ensure that land and water produce sustainable crops of these wild animals. Wildlife management tries to accomplish "sustainable yields" by monitoring predation and pathogens, studying the life histories of species, protecting and enhancing habitat, setting seasons and limits on fishing and hunting, providing supplemental feed and fish hatcheries, and patrolling illegal activities.
