The informal economy can be the largest employer within developing nations. Many NGO microfinance and aid programs focus on this sector. These are jobs not recorded by the government and not taxed. Their work and markets are usually local. They include jobs from hawking goods on streets, sales at nonregistered kiosks, markets or shops in squatter towns, the economies of indigenous people, barter trade, as well as unreported employment in drug cartels, weapons sales, gambling, and other illegal economic activities. Employment statistics collected by governments and agencies may not accurately reflect the true state of an economy with a large informal sector.
