Domesticated Animal Diversity
|
Farmer-breeders have selected for specific traits of many local varieties of domestic animals. The four major domesticated mammals-pigs, cattle, sheep, and goats-have diversified into four thousand recognized breeds. These varieties are rapidly being lost. Heirloom domestic livestock conservation protects these animals alive on farms and by freezing sperm and eggs.
