Conservation Easements

Definition
Conservation easements are used to restrict development on private property in order to protect the natural resources and conservation value of the land. The easement is either a voluntary donation or is sold by the landowner and is a legally binding agreement that limits the use of the land, or prevents development from taking place on the land in perpetuity while the land remains in private hands. The landowner receives tax relief and retains property rights from the easement.
