Malnutrition, Diet, Disease, and Education

Med_102961246_a5977818f6
Life loss from malnutrition has been calculated in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). The World Bank conservatively estimates about 14.5 million life years lost per year from malnutrition, or about eight out of every one thousand persons. More than half occur in children from birth to four years. The main deficiencies are protein, Vitamin A, iodine, and anemia. Diarrhea prevents nutrition absorption and is a primary cause of malnutrition. Malnutrition may have social causes (men eat before women, women before children; single working mothers serve junk food; colonially imposed crops like cassava are not balanced with complementary foods). Diet and nutrition education refers to the practice of educating, teaching, training, and imparting knowledge, ideas, and skills to people about diet, nutrition, additives, food safety, diseases related to undernourishment or malnutrition, exercise, eating habits, and lifestyle choices that affect health to improve their quality and length of life.
