Organizational governance refers to the rules and regulations set up by a particular nation that allow civil society organizations to exist. In the U.S., some function as nonprofits and avoid taxation of donations. Others can politically lobby and promote candidates (raising election funds) as they have different reporting requirements. In many developing nations and in the former Soviet Union, nonprofit organizations led by citizens need a permit to operate. Internal governance structures for nonprofits are sometimes dictated by national government requirements and sometimes invented by the organization itself. Internal governance standards vary wildly depending on if the citizen organization is multinational or local, supports a religious group or is secular, receives funding from private, business, and/or government donors.
