Media and Communication
Media is a crucial aspect of social change. It spreads ideas, it inspires groups fighting for power, and tries to change organizations through which power is exercised. Media has informational, educational, commercial, and entertainment values. Media is the vehicle of one of the central principles of democracy-what was called "freedom of the press" but now (with television, radio, movies, and the Internet) might be called "freedom of the media." The media as a communications form is amoral and can work for or against sustainability on a local, regional, or global scale. Spreading ideas, ethics, stories, and information about sustainability has become a major task.

So as usual, I wuz sittin' an' stinkin' 'bout summer eskape from skool an' wishin' it would last forever, but I know it won't, but that doesn't stop me from wishin', hopin' and thinkin', there mus be sumway outta this skool mess! I jes gotta find it! My perents, 'specially my father wants me an' my sister to read books over the summer vakation-eskape from the dungeon skool an' give him written reports! Man, I think the dragon-teecher musta put a spell on him or poisoned him an' mama, 'cause summer vakation is almos' like dungeon skool time! Even on my free time, I gotta read an' write stuff! An' the excuse for all this tirranie is "It's for your future life and you will appreciate all this effort when you're older!" Man, I never gonna get that ol'! I don't believe any kid, kin live long enuf to appreciate drudgery an' dragon skool torture, at home or at skool! Like for instance, here I am tryin' to compose sumthin' in my memory collection brain, while my father is pressin' me for a written an' oral report on a book I wuz s'posed to read, 'bout Hucklebury Fin!? Wow, I jes herd a big bang outside! It sounded like a big bomb - But it's thunder! Whew, thunder kin reely be scary sumtime an' it's so loud! But I betcha Huck Fin wasn't skareda no thunder-lightnin'! He wuld jes sit in the woods unnerneath sum trees with his pardnurs, until the storm gotta hold of itself an' shook out all the terrible noisieness, an' then it wuz quiet an' sunny all over agin! Plus, me an' Huck, we ain't no skardie cats, being afraid of a little ol' noisy storm! But I gotta admit, sumtimes the boom-crash litenin' kinda gits my attention - reel quick! An' then..., allofasudden it's gittin' noisier an' noisier all over agin! O.K., maybe if I jes write this litenin esperience an' tell my father 'bout this connection to Huck Fin, maybe that'll be enuf to set me free!? Like sumone famous sed, "I have a Dream" an' I'm sure he wuz speakin' for me ana lotta opressed dungeon skool kids, all over the wurl! Maybe I kin git sum extra kredit from my father, when I luk up on the internet, who sed the "Dream" stuff! That'll reely impress him. Huck Fin an' A Dream! Wutta kombination! Now I'm ready for papa!' All this lernin' stuff oughta git me off the hook for a few days an' I kin play an' have peaca mind an' no edukation for my "future life" stuff! Yeah, I'm sure this'll work, so I gonna sleep now an' be ready for tomorrow, for papa an' play! P an' P! Yeh, I like that. G'nite I luv you G'nite. Also, wie üblich war ich am Sitz'n und Stink'n üba die Sommerflucht ausser Schule und wünschte, sie dauerte ewig, aber ich wusste, das wird nix, aber das hält mich nich' vom Wünsch'n, Hoff'n und Denk'n ab, dass es aus diesem Schulschlamassel 'nen Weg raus geb'n muss! Ich muss ihn nur find'n! Meine Eltern, besonders mein Vater will, dass ich und meine Schwester während der Sommerferijen-Flucht ausser Kerkerschule Bücher les'n und ihm schriftliche Berichte liefern! Mann, ich glaub die Drachenlehrerin hat ihn verhext oder ihn und Mama vergiftet, weil die Sommerferijen fast wie die Kerkerschulzeit sind! Sogar in meiner Freizeit soll ich Zeugs les'n und schreib'n! Und die Entschuldigung für die ganze Türannei is': "Es ist für dein zukünftiges Leben und du wirst diese ganze Mühe zu würdigen wissen, wenn du älter bist!" Mann, so alt werd ich nie werd'n! Ich glaub nich', dass irgendein Kind lang genug leb'n kann, um Schufterei und Drachenschulfolter gut zu find'n, weder zu Hause noch inner Schule! Wie zum Beispiel, hier vasuch ich irgendwas aus der Gehirnsammlung meiner Erinnerung zusammenzubasteln, während mein Vater mich zwingt, einen schriftlichen und mündlichen Bericht üba 'n Buch zu geb'n, das ich üba Hucklebury Fin les'n sollte!? Wow, ich hab grad 'nen riesigen Knall draußen gehört! Es hörte sich an wie 'ne große Bombe - Aber es ist Donner! Puh, Donner kann machma' echt Angst machen und er is' so laut! Aber ich wette, Huck Fin hatte keine Angst vor Blitz und Donner! Er würde einfach im Wald sitz'n unter 'n paar Bäumen mit seinen Kumpels, bis der Sturm von alleine vaschwindet und seinen ganzen Krach vabreitet hat und dann wär's still und wieder überall sonnig! Außerdem, ich und Huck sind keine Angsthasen vor so'nem bißchen ollen lauten Sturm! Aber ich muss zugeb'n, machma' reagier ich auf so'n Crash-Bumm-Bang-Blitz irgendwie doch - ziemlich schnell! Und dann..., auf ein Mal wird es wieder lauter und lauter! Okay, wenn ich vielleicht einfach diese Blitzerfahrung aufschreib und mei'm Vater diese ganze Vabindung zu Huck Fin erzähl, vielleicht is' das genug, damit ich frei hab! Wie jemand Berühmtes sagte: "Ich habe einen Traum", und ich bin sicher, er hat für mich und 'ne Menge unterdrückter Kerkerschulkinder auf der ganzen Welt gesproch'n! Vielleicht bekomm ich ja 'n Extrabonus von mei'm Vater, wenn ich im Internet nachseh, wer das mit dem "Ich habe einen Traum"-Zeugs gesagt hat! Das wird ihn echt beeindruck'n. Huck Fin und Ein Traum! Was 'ne Kombi! Jetz' bin ich bereit für Papa! Dieser ganze Lernkram könnte mich ma' für'n paar Tage loslass'n und ich könnte spiel'n und meine Ruhe hab'n und keinen Unterricht für mein "zukünftiges Leben"-Zeugs! Ja, ich bin sicher, das geht, also werd ich jetz' schlaf'n und bereit sein für morgen, für Papa und Spiel'n! P und S! Ha, das gefällt mir. 'Nacht Hab euch lieb' 'Nacht. corporate media needs to be divested of the publicly-owned broadcast frequencies. let's shift corporate programing to their cable outlets and take abc, cbs, and nbc, and turn them into elected offices: just as the executive is an elected administration, we'd make three or for channels into an elected programming administration. if the administration did a good job of newscasting, provideda comprehensive view of the world around us, they would be re-elected.
of course no amount of legislation coming out of a legislative branch where corruption has become institutionalized is going to divest multi-national corporations of the public broadcast frequencies, thus we need to hold a national convention in order to get such proposed for ratification. many other problems besides media/popular information could be addressed at a national convention. please join us: http://www.foavc.org |
