Lepidoptera

Butterflies, moths, and skippers are examples of lepidopterans. Lepidoptera is an order of insects characterized by a soft body, prominent eyes, mouthparts coiled into a proboscis for extracting nectar, and colorful wings made with scales. The caterpillar stage can provide services such as silk-making or can be a pest such as the gypsy moth. Beautiful lepidoptera are part of the illegal trade in species. Many "butterfly farms" hope to undercut the illegal trade. Med_butterfly Photo Source

Cornwall Butterfly Conservation Cornwall Butterfly Conservation is working to establish the present status of butterflies in Cornwall so we can tell which species are increasing or in decline.

We also undertake surveying and monitoring of our rarer residents such as the Heath Fritillary, Marsh Fritillary, Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Silver-studded Blue, Large Blue and Grizzled Skipper butterflies.

With help from various conservation organisations and partners, we assist habitat management for rare species whose habitat is threatened by scrub invasion. This has resulted in saving from certain extinction the last surviving colonies in Cornwall of the Heath Fritillary.
