Definition
Biological patents refer to the ownership and legal rights to intellectual property that can be granted by a government to an applicant for a limited amount of time for discoveries that relate to living organisms, such as gene sequencing or biotechnology products. The scope of biological discoveries and materials that can be patented is subject to ethical questions particularly in relation to patenting human genes.
