FEATURED RESOURCES
|
Definition
Sustainable cities are those cities, towns and urban areas that use their resources to meet current needs while ensuring that adequate resources are available for future generations. Sustainable cities seek community development that enhances the local environment and quality of life as well as developing a local economy that supports both thriving human and ecological systems. Sustainable cities are characterized by improved public health and a better quality of life for all the residents by limiting waste, preventing pollution, maximizing conservation, promoting efficiency, and developing healthy regional economic development and vibrant communities. Integrated planning and design are key elements of developing sustainable cities and communities.

There is some great work being done to modify existing cities to make them more sustainable, but is there any that proposes how we can reach 100% sustainability - in other words, what we will do when there is no more petroleum for food, energy and transportation provision, and that will enable us to reverse global climate change?
My heart stopped for 10 minutes following a car accident in Kenya in 1980, and various projects occurred to me as I staggered, walked and jogged more than 330 miles to successfully regain the abilities to walk, speak and remember. Those projects are illustrated on my websites at www.greenmillennium.eu and www.greenmillennium.net.
I would like to use these ideas, which came to me in extreme circumstances (imagine learning how to walk and explain yourself when you can not walk, speak and remember, in the new country, England, that I had just arrived in) to provoke all of you into creating even better ideas for the eternity of our genes!
The components of our genes have always existed in our ancestors, and will continue to exist in our descendents. And yet, their existence in the form of our children and the women who give them to us, are the two most abused groups on the planet!
So, there is a lot of work to do if we are to make this planet even close to 100% sustainable, as illustrated on the open-source websites above! Please add your own comments here, or there!
