 Indigenous people are those people, and their descendants, who are native to a geographical area and were the first people to live there, prior to colonization. Aborigines and the first nations are alternative names for indigenous people. Indigenous rights are those human and legal rights that have been denied to indigenous people because of their heritage. Massacre of Indigineous Amazonians in Peru - 25 dead and counting
An ongoing, many month old peaceful protest in the Bagua region of the north western area of Peru was brutally attacked last Friday by state forces, resulting in the deaths of, at least, 25 native Indigenous Amazonian Peruvians. A motorway in the "curve of the devil" region had been blocked by local communities of the area who feel their land, health, livelihood and community is threatened by the government's giveaway of the area, and its precious resources, to multinational oil and gas exploration. They are perhaps right to feel sad, threatened and terrified, knowing how things have faired in neighbouring areas with a similar story, Sion, Equador and beyond...
Tomorrow a strike has been called in Peru in solidarity with the indegenous activists. Already one government minister has resigned over President Garcia´s orders to attack (massacre) and his post attack racist views in the media. Already there has been solidarity support action in de Hague, Holland. In tonight a vigil will be held in Barcelona
