Definition
Sustainable fishing can take place in the open seas (marine), coastal waters, and inland freshwater bodies. It includes crustaceans and mollusks (lobster, crabs, clams, shrimps) as well as bony fish, sharks, eels, whales and porpoises, and sea turtles. The "fish" may be wild, domesticated as in "aquaculture," or partially domesticated such as released stock from hatcheries. Sustainable "fisheries" attempt to provide humans with food, fish oil, animal feed, fish meal, aquarium fish, coral, recreation, and other products in a manner that is ecologically friendly, economically viable and equitable, and socially responsible to future generations.
