Reptiles
| Turtles, snakes, lizards, alligators, and crocodiles are examples of reptiles. Reptiles are members of the vertebrate class Reptilia that are characterized by having scales, laying amniotic eggs, and engaging in predation. There are about 8,000 reptile species and about 300 are threatened. They have been killed for the pet trade, for their shells and meat, from habitat loss, and from fear. Specific reptiles are poisonous. Some species provide the service of rodent control. Marine turtles and the Galápagos iguana are typical of marine reptiles. Over 7,500 are terrestrial. |
